Globular and Micellar Polymer Structures – Computer Simulations Study
Abstract
Polimery to fascynujące makromolekuły, które posiadają
zdolność do samoorganizacji się w najróżniejsze
nanostrutkury. Najbardziej podstawową strukturą jest
globula – pojedynczy łańcuch o kształcie sfery. Kolejną,
podobną strukturą, jest micela – która również ma sferyczny
kształt, ale składa się z wielu molekuł.
Do symulacji użyto metody Monte Carlo z algorytmem
Parallel Tempering. Wybrano gruboziarnisty model
liniowych polimerów o następujących architekturach:
homopolimer, kopolimer dwublokowy oraz długie
kopolimery wieloblokowe.
Zbadano kopolimery wieloblokowe o architekturze (An-Bn)4,
(A5-B5)n i (An-Bn)m w rozpuszczalniku. Spośród wielu
otrzymanych struktur należy wyróżnić następujące: koraliki
na łańcuszku, struktury wielordzeniowe, lamelarne globule,
spirale, hand-shake oraz torus z rdzeniem.
Następnie przeprowadzono symulacje układów wielu
łańcuchów. Zbadano roztwory składające się z
homopolimerów i kopolimerów dwublokowych
(symetrycznych i asymetrycznych) skupiając się na
procesach micelizacji. Kopolimery symetryczne tworzyły
mieszaninę micel i małych cylindrów.
Wyznaczono punkty mętnienia i micelizacji w funkcji temperatury i ciśnienia.
Polymers are fascinating macromolecules which can selforganize in many different nanostructures. The most basic polymer state is a globule – a single chain folded in a spherical shape. Second, similar structure, is a micelle – it also has spherical shape, but it consists of many aggregated molecules. A Monte Carlo simulation method with a Parallel Tempering algorithm is used. A coarse-grained model of linear polymers is chosen with following architectures: homopolymer, diblock copolymer, and long multiblock copolymer. Multiblock chains with (An-Bn)4, (A5-B5)n, and (An-Bn)m architectures with varied n and m in a solvent were studied. Few different structures may be distinguished: pearl necklace structure, multicore structures, lamellar globules, spirals, hand-shake, tori with cores, and double droplets. Next, simulations of many chains were performed. Solutions made of homopolymer and diblock copolymers with symmetric and asymmetric block sizes were studied, with a focus on a micellization process. Symmetric copolymers were forming mixture of micelles and small cylindrical structures. Only asymmetric diblock copolymers were able to form a pure micellar solution of similar sizes. Finally forming of micelles made of diblock copolymers (A5-B5) in high pressure solvent was studied. Cloud-points and micellization points in space of temperature and pressure were obtained.
