ZDROWIE - CHOROBY NIE TYLKO W PRADZIEJACH
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2009) Gładykowska-Rzeczycka, Judyta Julia
A brief outline of health and diseases over the ages is presented herein based on written and iconographic sources, as well as on results of paleopathological studies. The article covers the earliest civilizations, chiefly of the Old World - Eurasia and Africa: the civilizations of China, India, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and the Roman Empire, as well as medieval and contemporary societies. The genesis and source (cradle) of some diseases, their dynamics, spread and influence on the fate of humans and nations are considered, examining their effect on socio-economic, political and cultural structures, and on science. The biological condition of human populations has been, and always is, inextricably linked to the state of the natural environment, in the broadest sense of this word. The growing (largely negative) impact of humans on the environment is increasingly clearly leading to its deterioration.

    PREMIER WOLNYCH ŁUŻYC
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2009) Suwart, Adam
Wojciech Kóćka’s life could easily serve as a source material of many action and historical film screenplays. He has been hunted by the Nazi, has gone into hiding following threads by the NKVD and have had not an easy life in the first years of the communist Poland. In 1945 he was regarded as the most serious candidate for the position o f Prime Minister of a Lusatian Free State. He has never repudiated his Lusatian roots and became one of the most eminent intellectuals in the post-war era.

    CZY ISTNIAŁA KULTURA BROMME?
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2009) Kobusiewicz, Michał
Substantial progress in the Final Palaeolithic studies in Central and Eastern Europe over the last three decades sheds a new light on the problem of the Bromme culture. It turned out that the Lyngby points, known also as ‘fossile directeur’, have been found in a large number far away from the core area of the Bromme culture. Their presence in these areas has been interpreted by many scholars as an indication of arrival of the groups from southern Scandinavia. However, detailed analysis of these projectile points indicates that they comprised an excellent and efficient hunting weapon commonly adopted by all tundra hunters. By no means they can be treated as a cultural marker. Moreover, it is not at all clear whether the Bromme culture existed? Majority of studies used to focus upon flint artefact typology. However, its heuristic potential in the discussed area has been exhausted and its further continuation is counterproductive. Alternative research strategy is needed aimed at recognition of cultural differentiation in Final Palaeolithic and Mesolithic along with different aspects of hunter-gatherers existence such as subsistence pattern, space organisation in settlement, social organisation, spiritual life, anthropological structure, etc. This new approach is the only means of objective reconstruction of cultural differentiation of the oldest periods of the European prehistory.
