LOVE as a culture- and language-specific phenomenon: an ethnolinguistic study of the concept of KÆRLIGHED in Danish
Abstract
Głównym celem pracy jest zbadanie konceptualizacji MIŁOŚCI w języku duńskim na podstawie czerech typów danych językowych – danych słownikowych, korpusowych, tekstowych i ankietowych. Dysertacja obejmuje analizę zarówno całego konceptu jak i jego pojedynczych podkategorii i pozwala zrozumieć dynamikę i złożoność całej kategorii. Przede wszystkim należy zwrócić uwagę na to, że koncept MIŁOŚĆ jest powiązany z innymi połaciami duńskiego obrazu świata i tym, jak Duńczycy postrzegają MAŁŻEŃSTWO, MACIERZYŃSTWO, BOGA, czy PRZYJAŹŃ, oraz że na jego strukturę wpływa wiele czynników, np. chrześcijański model miłości, metafory, modele funkcjonujące na poziomie pojedynczych podkategorii, czy efekty prototypowe. Ponadto konceptualizacja MIŁOŚCI w języku duńskim zdaje się zależeć do pewnego stopnia od indywidualnych doświadczeń użytkowników języka oraz od czynników socjolingwistycznych. W końcu, mimo że Duński koncept MIŁOŚĆ ma wiele wspólnego z jego odpowiednikami w innych językach europejskich, jest on także unikalny, co widać np. w świetle powiązanych konceptów takich jak ØMHED ‘czułość, delikatność’ and HENGIVENHED ‘poświęcenie, oddanie’, czy modeli funkcjonujących na poziomie pojedynczych podkategorii, które są charakterystyczne dla duńskiej mentalności i duńskiego dyskursu.
The main goal of the dissertation is to uncover the conceptualization of LOVE in Danish based on four sets of linguistic data – dictionary, corpus, text and survey data. First and foremost, the analysis, examining both the concept as a whole as well as its individual subcategories, helps one to understand the complexity and the dynamic character of the concept. As reflected in the collected material, the concept is inherently connected with other, vast areas of the Danish worldview, such as, for example, MARRIAGE, MOTHERHOOD, GOD or FRIENDSHIP, while its structure is influenced by a number of factors, among others the Christian model of LOVE, metaphors, models functioning at the level of individual subcategories, and prototype effects. On the top of that, there are strong indications that the conceptualization of LOVE in Danish also depends, to some extent, on the individual experiences of the speakers as well as sociolinguistic factors. Finally, although it shares much in common with other European languages, the concept of LOVE in Danish has its unique, culture- and language relative nature, among others reflected in related concepts such as ØMHED ‘tenderness, affection’ and HENGIVENHED ‘dedication, devotion, loving-kindness’, and the models functioning at the level of the single subcategories, specific to the Danish mentality and discourse.
