Wokół legendy o śmierci księżniczki Ludgardy - wybrane konteksty historiograficzne oraz literackie świadectwa (XIII - XXI wiek)

Abstract

The truths and myths around the legend on the death of Duchess consort Ludgarda – selected historiographical contexts and literary testimonies (13th c. – 21st c.)

This article attempts to present the sources and variants of a legend that has been passed down from generation to generation since the thirteenth century and explores the unsolved circumstances surrounding the death of Duchess consort Ludgarda (born c. 1260 – d. 1283) – the first wife of Przemysł II (b. 1257 – d. 1296), the Duke of Greater Poland and future Polish king. With its descriptions strikingly vivid and imagination-provoking, the legend, written in the form of a song, might have originated within the courtly and knightly circles as early as during the lifetime of Przemysł II, i.e. in the last years of the thirteenth century. Its universal and emotional message soon made it a classic retelling to be regularly performed as the standing repertory of itinerant musicians and entertainers wandering from town to town. Over time, the legend of the mysterious event had undergone modifications and, no doubt, expanded to include a number of new subplots that were supposed to be even more attractive to wider circles of listeners. Its content was recuperated through a summary made by the fifteenth century Polish chronicler Jan Długosz, and further on by, possibly, folk tales that have survived in an oral tradition for centuries though only in vestigial forms (and remain unknown today). The legend have provided inspiration for historians and writers alike for a number of the following centuries. The present author discusses the most important approaches to the theme adopted by medieval chroniclers and modern historians, but also shows in a chronological order different (often unknown) interpretations of the medieval legend in the literary output of poets, playwrights and writers of fiction (from the 18th c. to the 21st. c.).Celem artykułu jest ukazanie źródeł i wariantów legendy narastającej od XIII wieku wokół niewyjaśnionych okoliczności śmierci księżniczki Ludgardy (ur. ok. 1260 – zm. 1283) – pierwszej żony księcia wielkopolskiego i przyszłego króla Polski Przemysła II (ur. 1257 – zm. 1296). Pobudzająca wyobraźnię i zapisana w formie pieśni legenda mogła zrodzić się w kręgach dworsko-rycerskich jeszcze za życia Przemysła II, w ostatnich latach XIII stulecia. Jej uniwersalny i emocjonalny przekaz sprawił, iż weszła do repertuaru wędrownych igrców, z czasem ulegając modyfikacjom i zapewne obrastając nowymi wątkami atrakcyjnymi dla szerokiego kręgu słuchaczy. Utwór ten, dzięki streszczeniu dokonanemu przez XV-wiecznego kronikarza polskiego Jana Długosza, a być może także poprzez zachowane szczątkowo (i dziś nieznane) przekazy funkcjonujące w obiegu ludowym, przez kolejne stulecia inspirował zarówno historyków, jak i pisarzy. Autor przedstawił najważniejsze sposoby ujęcia motywu dokonane przez średniowiecznych kronikarzy i historyków nowożytnych, a także ukazał w chronologicznym porządku różne (często nieznane) interpretacje średniowiecznej legendy w twórczości poetów, dramaturgów i pisarzy (od XVIII do XXI wieku).
