Towards the university as an institution of the common. Philosophical foundations of the critical higher education studies
Abstract
Twierdzę, że anglosaskie dyskusje dotyczące transformacji publicznego uniwersytetu związanych z rozwojem gospodarki opartej na wiedzy, prowadzone w ramach badań nad szkolnictwem wyższym głównego nurtu, poruszają się we właściwym liberalnej filozofii politycznej horyzoncie konceptualnym, zawężonym do dwóch kategorii dóbr i własności. Dóbr publicznych (uzależnionych od działalności koordynacyjnej państwa) oraz własności prywatnej (powiązanej z działaniem mechanizmów rynkowych. Wielu badaczy uznaje, że w kontekście publicznego szkolnictwa wyższego, na skutek wkroczenia w jego obręb logiki zysku i związanej z nim racjonalności instrumentalnej, możemy dostrzec postępujące zacieranie się granicy między tymi porządkami. Proces ten za Marksem nazywam idealną postacią subsumcji pracy w sektorze szkolnictwa wyższego pod kapitał. W rozprawie rozwijam teoretyczne podstawy krytycznych badań nad szkolnictwem wyższym. Dzieli sie ona na trzy części. Pierwsza ugruntowuje tezę i zarysowuje pole dociekań. Druga dokonuje operacjonalizacji Marksowskiego pojęcia subsumcji pracy pod kapitał dla badań nad szkolnictwem wyższym. W trzeciej opracowuję filozoficzne podstawy krytycznych badań nad szkolnictwem wyższym, których źródła lokuje w Antonia Negriego tezie o kryzysie prawa wartości. W zakończeniu konfrontuję się z wyrastającą z tego projektu ideą uniwersytetu jako instytucji dobra wspólnego.
The following thesis is developed in the dissertation: the anglosaxon debates in the field of higher education research over the transformations of the public university are constrained by their conceptual horizon rooted in liberal political philosophy that limits the notions of goods and ownership to two categories. Public goods (based on the state's coordination) and the private property (related to the market). However, many researchers claim that in the context of public higher education, due to the intrusion of profit logic and instrumental rationality, we are facing an ongoing process of hybridization of this two realms. This process is reconceptualized through the Marxian concept of an ideal form of subsumption of labor under capital.The dissertation is oriented towards development of theoretical foundations of the critical higher education studies.It consists of three parts. First that grounds the thesis and drafts the field of the inquiry. Second, operationalize Marxian concept of subsumption for the higher education research. Finally the third investigates philosophical foundations of the critical higher education studies and traces its origin back to Antonio Negri's thesis on the crisis of the law of value. The conslusion part confronts the idea of the university as an institution of the common.
