„Livre des merveilles”. Burgundzka wizja Orientu późnego średniowiecza w miniaturach manuskryptu fr. 2810 z Bibliothèque nationale de France

Abstract

Praca poświęcona jest słynnemu rękopisowi zamówionemu przez Jana bez Trwogi, księcia Burgundii, ok. 1410 roku. Przechowywana obecnie w Bibliothèque nationale de France, księga Livre des merveilles (ms. fr. 2810) jest zbiorem ilustrowanych opowieści z podróży do Azji autorstwa m.in. Marco Polo, Odoryka z Pordenone, Johna z Mandeville i Ricoldo z Montecroce. W pracy przeanalizowany został obraz Orientu ukazany w miniaturach tego rękopisu. Ma on szczególny charakter, gdyż w programie ikonograficznym ujęta została myśl polityczna – poprzez zamówienie rękopisu, którego dekoracja przedstawia Orient z jednej strony fascynujący i bogaty a z drugiej przerażający i groźny, pretendujący do tronu Francji książę Burgundii chciał podkreślić, że jego zainteresowania odległymi terenami przybliżają go do tytułu idealnego księcia łączącego odwagę chrześcijańskiego władcy (uczestniczył w krucjacie) z wiedzą i mądrością. Teksty zebrane w księdze oraz zdobiące je miniatury tworzą niemal kompletną historię świata, a zleceniodawca takiego dzieła ukazuje siebie jako wykształconego władcę, dążącego do zdobycia i ugruntowania wiedzy. Aby móc ukazać znaczenie programu ikonograficznego w odpowiednim kontekście, przestudiowana została nie tylko ikonografia, ale również okoliczności zamówienia – źródła zainteresowań Orientem na dworze burgundzkim a także obraz świata obecny w wyobraźni francuskich środowisk dworskich tego czasu. W studium również została przeanalizowana specyfika gatunku literatury średniowiecznej określanego jako ilustrowane opowieści z podróży.

The thesis is dedicated to a famous manuscript made at the request of John the Fearless, duke of Burgundy, c. 1410. Preserved in Bibliothèque nationale de France, the book Livre des merveilles (ms. fr. 2810) is a collection of accounts of travels to Asia written by Marco Polo, Odorico da Pordenone, John of Mandeville, Ricoldo da Montecroce, and others. This thesis analyzes the image of Orient according to illuminations of this manuscript. There is a political influence that can be seen in the decoration. Ordering a manuscript which pictures represent the Orient that is on one hand fascinating and rich and on the other hand terrifying and dangerous, the duke of Burgundy, that had ambitions to gain the crown of France, wanted to emphasize the fact that his interest in distant lands made him close to the model of a perfect prince that combines the courage of a Christian ruler (he took part in a crusade) with knowledge and wisdom. The texts collected in the book as well as the decoration create an almost complete history of the world. The duke knew that the owner of such a manuscript would be perceived as an educated ruler for whom knowledge has great meaning. In order to show the meaning of the iconographical program in the right context, the thesis focuses not only on iconography but also on the circumstances of the order, such as the sources of oriental interests at the court of Burgundy and the image of the world present in the imagination of the French court of the time. In the thesis it has also been studied the character of a medieval literary genre called illustrated travel literature.
