Pedagog – a forgotten publishing initiative of Kazimierz Szulc
Abstract
Od lat 40. XIX wieku sporo uwagi w Poznaniu poświęcano problemowi
oświaty. Działania w tym zakresie podjęło i zrealizowało Towarzystwo Pedagogiczne,
wspierane przez redakcje wielu czasopism i Ligę Polską. Zgłaszano postulaty
pod adresem kadry nauczającej, dbając o odpowiedni poziom ich przygotowania.
Kadrze pedagogicznej, rodzicom dzieci oraz księżom miały służyć inicjatywy wydawnicze,
dostarczające im właściwych książek lub czasopism systematycznie publikujących
artykuły o treściach wychowawczych, pedagogicznych, metodycznych,
a także literackich i historycznych. Do tej grupy należały np. „Pismo dla Nauczycieli
Ludu”, „Szkoła Polska”, „Szkółka dla dzieci”, „Szkółka dla młodzieży”, które jednak
przestano wydawać w połowie wieku. Zaradzić tej sytuacji postanowił Kazimierz
Szulc, poznański pedagog i wydawca. Zainicjował wydawanie czasopisma „Pedagog”
mającego wypełnić lukę na rynku w zakresie tematyki oświatowej. Szulc wydał
trzy numery i zakończył działalność. Wyruszył do Królestwa Polskiego w celu wzięcia
udziału w powstaniu styczniowym.
Since the 1840s the problem of education in Poznań had become a matter of much scrutiny and interest. The Pedagogical Society, supported by editing offices of a considerable number of periodicals and the Polish League, was primarily involved in public activity focused on the problem. Postulates concerning the teaching staff at schools were proposed that aimed at the sustainability of high standards in their professional education. The pedagogical staff, parents and priests were collectively targeted by various publishing initiatives in view of a provision of appropriate books and periodicals that published on regular basis articles with educational content providing pedagogical advise, methodological aids and historical and literary content. This group included such titles as Pismo dla Nauczycieli Ludu, Szkoła Polska, Szkółka dla dzieci, Szkółka dla młodzieży, though these publications ceased to be published in the half of the century. This situation was to be remedied by a decision made by Kazimierz Szulc, a Poznań-based educationist and publisher. His initiative to publish the periodical entitled Pedagog that was to fill the gap in the market of educational materials, but the title was suspended after the publication of its third issue following Szulc’s departure to the Kingdom of Poland to join insurgents of the January Uprising.
