Translating and Adapting for Young Audiences: The Case of 《西游记》(Journey to the West) by Wu Cheng’en
Abstract
Kultura chińska, o długiej historii i głębokim znaczeniu, stanowi ważny nośnik dziedziczenia mądrości narodowej i wartości.
Arthura Waleya, skrót Alison Waley) oraz Journey to the West with the Stone Monkey (przerobione przez YunChonga Pana). Niniejsze badanie wyjaśnia sposób przedstawienia chińskich cech lokalnych i środowiska kulturowego w międzykulturowej literaturze dziecięcej, eksploruje skuteczne strategie rozpowszechniania chińskiej kultury ludowej w światowej literaturze dziecięcej, promuje międzykulturową wymianę i zrozumienie oraz dostarcza modelu referencyjnego dla międzynarodowej komunikacji chińskich klasycznych dzieł literackich skierowanej do młodych odbiorców niechińskich.
Chinese culture, with its long history and profound connotations, serves as an important carrier for the inheritance of national wisdom and values. As one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, Journey to the
West is not only a treasure of traditional Chinese folklore but also a highly influential cultural IP with global communication value. It integrates rich mythological images, folk customs, and moral concepts, and has been widely adapted and translated worldwide, especially in children’s literature. Taking the English translations and adaptations of Journey to the West for child readers as the research object, this dissertation adopts content analysis, case analysis, and comparative analysis, under the theoretical framework of the Cultural Turn in translation studies and André Lefevere’s rewriting theory. It focuses on four key texts: the canonical Chinese version, Collinson Fair’s adapted version based on WJF Jenner’s translation, and three English children’s adaptations—Monkey: the classic Chinese adventure tale(David Seow), The Monkey King (Arthur Waley trans., Alison Waley abridged), and Journey to the West with the Stone Monkey (YunChong Pan retold). The study examines the representation and reconstruction of Chinese folklore, character portrayals, traditional festivals, and poetic elements in these English versions for
preschoolers, young children, and adolescents. It finds that translators and adapters do not simply omit cultural elements but carry out hierarchical cultural reconstruction according to children’s cognitive development and cultural familiarity. Core character traits are retained, while complex mythological backgrounds and culturally dense content are streamlined or adjusted with age-differentiated strategies. This reflects the shift from linguistic fidelity to cultural functionality in the Cultural Turn, positioning translators as cultural mediators. This research clarifies the presentation of Chinese local characteristics and cultural environment in cross-cultural children’s literature, explores effective strategies for the dissemination of Chinese folk culture in global children’sliterature, promotes cross-cultural exchange and understanding, and provides a referential model for the international communication of Chinese classical literary works to young non-Chinese audiences.
