The Life and Career of Agenor Gołuchowski the Younger
Abstract
Celem mojej pracy jest stworzenie biografii Agenora Gołuchowskiego młodszego (1849-1921), polskiego polityka i dyplomaty, sprawującego funkcję ministra spraw zagranicznych Austro-Węgier (1895-1906). Moja praca podzielona jest na cztery części. Pierwszy rozdział, zatytułowany „Młodość i kariera Agenora Gołuchowskiego młodszego do 1895 roku” rozpoczyna się krótkim streszczeniem historii jego rodziny i pozycji społecznej, następnie następuje opis jego wczesnej kariery. Drugi rozdział, zatytułowany „Minister spraw zagranicznych” podąża za jego jedenastoletnim sprawowaniem tego stanowiska. Trzeci rozdział jest zatytułowany „Agenor Gołuchowski młodszy na emeryturze”. Opowiada o ostatnich dekadach życia Gołuchowskiego, pierwszych relatywnie spokojnych latach od 1906 do 1914 roku, później burzliwych latach wojennych i w końcu o trzyletnim okresie od końca wojny do jego śmierci w 1921 roku. Ostatni rozdział, „Agenor Gołuchowski młodszy – kim był?” ma na celu syntezę wszystkich informacji, jakie posiadamy na temat jego jako polityka, dyplomaty, a także osoby prywatnej i nakreślenie jego osobowości i charakteru. Poszukuję odpowiedzi na pytania o jego tożsamość narodową, polityczne idee, jak również jego relacje z rodzicami, żoną i dziećmi.
The aim of my thesis is to create a biography of Agenor Gołuchowski the Younger (1849-1921), Polish statesman and diplomat who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria-Hungary (1895-1906). My thesis is divided into four parts. The first chapter titled “Youth and Career of Agenor Gołuchowski the Younger Until 1895” starts with a brief summary of his family’s history and social position, followed by a description of his early career. The second chapter titled “Minister of Foreign Affairs” follows his eleven-years-long holding of this position. The third chapter of the thesis is titled “Agenor Gołuchowski the Younger in Retirement.” It is about the last decades of Gołuchowski’s life – first relatively peaceful years from 1906 to 1914, then the definitely not peaceful years of the First World War, and the last three years in the post-war period till his death in 1921. The final chapter of my thesis, “Agenor Gołuchowski the Younger – Who Was He?,” tries to synthesize all the information we have about him as a politician, diplomat, and as a private individual to describe the characteristics of his personality. I attempt to answer the questions about his national identity, his political and diplomatic ideas but also about his relations with parents, wife, and children. It concludes my dissertation.
