(R)evolution in the perception of history, national identity and nature in the contemporary Anglo-Guyanese novel
Abstract
Głównym celem niniejszej pracy doktorskiej jest prześledzenie rozwoju postkolonialnej powieści gujańskiej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem trzech obszarów tematycznych: historii, tożsamości narodowej i natury. Rozprawa wyróżnia powieść gujańską jako oryginalny i intrygujący dyskurs literacki, który mimo tego że wpisuje się w szeroko pojęty kanon anglokaraibski, zasługuje jednak na osobne miejsce w jego ramach. Dysertacja składa się ze wstępu, rozdziału teoretycznego, trzech rozdziałów analitycznych i konkluzji. Rozdział pierwszy omawia i uzasadnia wybór metodologii, która wpisuje się w nurt studiów postkolonialnych, choć miejscami wychodzi poza ich ramy, odwołując się między innymi do teorii ekokrytycznych. Analityczną część pracy otwiera rozdział drugi, który skupia się na rozwoju gujańskiej powieści historycznej. Rozdział trzeci omawia negocjację gujańskiej tożsamości narodowej, a rozdział czwarty poświęcony jest Naturze. Konkluzja podsumowuje wyniki analiz i przedstawia możliwe ścieżki dalszych badań nad literaturą gujańską.
The main goal of this dissertation is the analysis of the postcolonial Guyanese novel with a view to tracing its evolution from the half of the twentieth century in three of its main thematic fields: history, national identity and nature. The present thesis differentiates the Guyanese novel as an original and intriguing literary discourse which, despite being part of the broadly defined Anglo-Caribbean canon, deserves a separate place within its body. The dissertation comprises of the introduction, one theoretical chapter, three analytical chapters and the conclusion. Chapter one discusses the methodology, which inscribes itself into the postcolonial studies but nevertheless at points reaches beyond their realms by, for example, the inclusion of eco-critical theories. The analytical part of the thesis opens with Chapter two, which centres on the evolution of the Guyanese historical novel. Chapter three discusses the negotiations of the Guyanese national identity and chapter four scrutinizes the discourse of Nature, understood not only as a non-human world but also as an ontological order. The conclusion summarizes the results and sketches possible new routes for the researchers interested in the Guyanese literature.
