Spór o redukcjonizm w medycynie. Studium filozoficzne i metodologiczne

Abstract

Rozprawa jest poświęcona problemowi redukcjonizmu w metodologii nauk medycznych. W prezentowanej pracy rozważam trzy kwestie: Po pierwsze, rekonstruuje stanowisko redukcjonizmu i antyredukcjonizmu w świetle rozważań wybranych współczesnych filozofów nauki i biologii.Po drugie, dokonuję eksplikacji podstawowych założeń redukcjonistycznego i systemowego stylu myślenia w medycynie. Paradygmatów bazujących odpowiednio na perspektywie redukcjonizmu i antyredukcjonizmu.Po trzecie, próbuję wskazać, że za płaszczyznę integracji badań prowadzonych w ramach perspektywy redukcjonistycznej i systemowej w biomedycynie, może służyć biologia systemów. Wskazuje, że nawet w przypadku gdy arbitralnie uznalibyśmy, że redukcjonizm jest słuszny błędem byłoby skupienie się w biomedycynie jedynie na badaniach z zakresu biologii molekularnej. Jako podstawa integracji paradygmatu redukcjonistycznego i systemowego może służyć biologia systemów. Charakterystyczną cechą biologii systemów jest bowiem jej inkluzywny charakter (dążenie do wskazania korelacji między różnymi poziomami systemowymi) oraz relacyjne i funkcjonalne ujęcie problemów. Integracja taka zmniejszała by ryzyko sytuacji w której lekarze poszukujący skutecznej terapii pominęliby istotne detale molekularne bądź właściwości i relacje systemowe. This dissertation is devoted to the problem of reductionism in the methodology of medical research. I consider three major issues: First, I reconstruct reductionism and antireductionism in the light of some considerations of contemporary philosophers of science and biology. Secondly, I explicate the fundamental assumptions of the reductionist and system way of thinking in medicine – the paradigms based on the reductionist and antireductionist perspectives, respectively. Thirdly, I try to show that the role of the basis for the integration of research conducted from the reductionist and system perspective in biomedicine can be played by systems biology.I emphasize that even assuming quite arbitrarily that reductionism is right, it would be a mistake to focus in biomedicine only on the research within molecular biology. I argue that the basis for the integration of the reductionist and system paradigms should be systems biology. The characteristic feature of systems biology is its inclusiveness (the search for correlations between different system levels) as well as the relational and functional way of dealing with problems. Such an integration would lower the risk of situations in which physicians aiming for effective therapies would overlook the essential molecular details or system properties and relations.
