Selected literary presentations of Swedish remembrance culture of the Holocaust and World War II
Abstract
Celem rozprawy jest wprowadzenie literackiej perspektywy do rozważań na temat szwedzkiej kultury pamięci dotyczącej II wojny światowej i Zagłady. Realizację celu umożliwia analiza trzech wybranych utworów literatury szwedzkiej w odniesieniu do teorii retoryki pamięci zbiorowej sformułowanej przez Astrid Erll. Badanie ma również na celu wskazanie potencjalnego pamięciotwórczego oddziaływania utworów w kontekście debaty o szwedzkiej neutralności w II wojnie światowej i uczestnictwa Szwecji w globalnej spuściźnie Zagłady. Analiza polega zatem na identyfikacji strategii tekstowych, które sprzyjają upowszechnianiu pewnej formy pamięci zbiorowej. Pierwszy rozdział dysertacji stanowi historyczny przegląd najważniejszych pojęć formułowanych w badaniach nad pamięcią. Drugi rozdział zawiera rozważania nad literaturą jako nośnikiem pamięci oraz omówienie historycznych uwarunkowań, które znacząco wpłynęły na kształt szwedzkiej kultury pamięci o II wojnie światowej i Zagładzie. W trzecim rozdziale przedstawiona została koncepcja retoryki pamięci zbiorowej, typologia sposobów wykorzystania historii Klasa-Görana Karlssona, a także model analizy oraz samo badanie, które wykazało, że wybrane utwory można uznać za ważne i aktualne reprezentacje szwedzkiej kultury pamięci okresu 1939–1945. Utwory te mogą w istotny sposób przyczynić się do weryfikacji i przekształcenia pamięci zbiorowej Szwedów.
The aim of the dissertation is to introduce a literary perspective to considerations about the Swedish culture of remembrance concerning World War II and the Holocaust. The implementation of the goal is possible thanks to the analysis of three selected works of Swedish literature in relation to the theory of rhetoric of collective memory formulated by Astrid Erll. The study also intends to identify the potential memory-forming effect of the works in the context of the debate on Swedish neutrality in World War II and Sweden's participation in the global legacy of the Holocaust. The analysis consists therefore in identifying textual strategies that favour the dissemination of a certain form of collective memory. The first chapter is a historical overview of the most important concepts formulated in memory studies. The second chapter contains considerations on literature as a medium of memory and a discussion of historical conditions that significantly influenced the shape of the Swedish culture of remembrance about World War II and the Holocaust. The third chapter presents the concept of rhetoric of collective memory, the typology of the use of history by Klas-Göran Karlsson, as well as the model of analysis and the study itself, which showed that the selected works can be considered important and current representations of the Swedish culture of memory of the 1939–1945 period. These works can significantly contribute to the verification and transformation of the Swedish collective memory.
