What an institutional repository can offer to its academic community? The case example of the AMUR repository and other repositories worldwide
Abstract
Wiedza jest bardzo cennym surowcem. Jej rozpowszechnianiem zajmują się, obok komercyjnych dystrybutorów, powstające już od ponad dekady otwarte repozytoria. Referat prezentuje ofertę, którą repozytoria instytucjonalne kierują do swojej społeczności naukowej oraz uczelni. Obok „pakietu podstawowego” usług, czyli możliwości archiwizowania dokumentów różnego typu, upowszechniania dorobku naukowego, wzmacniania jego widoczności, szerokich możliwości wyszukiwawczych (zastosowanie Open Archives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting), czy bezpiecznego archiwizowania obiektów, referat przedstawia również inicjatywy, które rozszerzają ofertę repozytoriów. Wśród nich warto wymienić np. nową rolę repozytorium jako platformy wydawniczej (eScholarship, University of California), zastosowanie protokołu SWORD ułatwiającego deponowanie dokumentów, prace nad analizą cytowań literatury dostępnej w Open Access czy tworzenie w repozytoriach e-portfoliów pracowników naukowych. Podsumowując, artykuł prezentuje ofertę repozytoriów instytucjonalnych oraz nowe trendy w ich rozwoju.
Knowledge is a public good and a very important and strategic asset. Its distribution is supposed to be furnished by commercial distributors and open access projects alike. The latter have been in operation for more than a decade. The present article discusses the offer that university-based institutional repositories make to their research and academic communities. Beside presenting the basic set of offered services, i.e., the possibility of archiving documents of varied type, promotion of research output, enhancing its visibility, providing a vast array of searching techniques (the application of Open Archives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting), or a safe way of archiving objects, the papers goes to present initiatives that broaden and expand the existing offer of repositories. These initiatives include, for example, a new role of repositories as a publishing platform (eScholarship, University of California), an application of the SWORD protocol to facilitate document submission, works on the analysis of citations available in Open Access, and a creation of e-portfolios of research workers as valuable learning and assessment tools. To sum up, the paper presents the offer of institutional repositories and new trends in their development.
