Abstract
The concepts of national interest or raison d’etat continue to be fundamental elements in the foreign policies of states. Making direct reference to these concepts is crucial for making the arguments employed in political discussions efficient. The paper presents theoretical considerations on the issue of raison d’etat or national interest. It attempts to distinguish between the meanings of these two concepts, presents the changes in how they have been understood and tries to approach them theoretically. It also refers to how the raison d’etat and national interest are understood by N. Machiavelli, C. Le Bret and a range of contemporary authors. The theoretical approach to national interest makes use of V. Udalov’s theory, which discusses this concept as understood by researchers from the two opposing blocs at the time of the Cold War – the USA and the USSR. The paper also refers to the concept of interest in the context of international relations.

Pojmovi ratio status i narodni interes javljaju se u diskusiji na međunarodnom nivou, ali i u unutrašnjoj politici. Uprkos dinamičnom razvoju procesa globalizacije i transformacije tradicionalne unutrašnje politike (npr.: pojava postpolitike) treba podvući da kategorije ratio statusa i narodnog interesa još uvek predstavljaju bitan sastavni deo političke retorike. Ovo proizilazi iz praktičnosti više spomenutih kategorija u vođenju inostrane politike, kao i politike na državnom nivou. Direktan poziv na narodni interes predstavlja bitan argument u političkoj diskusiji. Rezultat toga je taj, što je sledeća argumentacija uzaludna, jer narodni interes treba da bude prioritet za politiku i državu. Osim toga, obe kategorije ne ubrajaju se samo u praktičan politički rečnik. Prigovor da se postupi protiv narodnog interesa je i prigovor da se deluje na štetu društva. Ovo označava da su oni i dalje osnova za delovanje u međunarodnoj zajednici, kao i u sferi unutrašnje politike. Ovo čini osnovu za dalja, dublja istraživanja o teoretskim aspektima narodnog interesa ili ratio statusa.
