Społeczne aspekty granicy i pogranicza meksykańsko-amerykańskiego

Abstract

Celem rozprawy jest szeroko rozumiana socjologiczna refleksja nad problematyką granicy i pogranicza, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem przypadku granicy i pogranicza pomiędzy Meksykiem a Stanami Zjednoczonymi. Praca składa się z dwóch części. Pierwsza część stanowi krytyczną analizę i rekonstrukcję, z perspektywy socjologii i nauk społecznych, różnych typów granicy (border, boundary, frontier) oraz pogranicza, z uwzględnieniem ich wymiaru lokalnego i globalnego. Oprócz wskazania różnorodnych funkcji oraz przemian będących ich udziałem, umiejscawia się zjawisko występowania granic i pograniczy w kontekście współczesnych procesów społecznych. Druga część pracy odnosi się do konkretnego przypadku, ilustrującego kompleksowość oraz różnorodność problemów charakterystycznych dla tego zagadnienia – granicy i pogranicza meksykańsko-amerykańskiego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem regionu Tijuana-San Diego. Część ta jest próbą uchwycenia społecznej dynamiki tego obszaru oraz weryfikacji wybranych elementów teorii granic i pograniczy.

The thesis is a sociological reflection on border and borderland, with special emphasis put on the Mexican – U.S. border and borderland. The first part of the dissertation is a critical analysis and reconstruction of the types of border/boundary/frontier and borderland, including their local and global dimension, from the perspective of sociology and social sciences. In addition to showing diverse functions and transformations of this phenomenon, the thesis situates borders and borderlands in the context of contemporary social processes. The second part of the thesis illustrates the complexity and diversity of the problems characteristic for the issue at the example of a specific case: the Mexican – U.S. border and borderland, with particular focus on the Tijuana-San Diego region. This part is an attempt to capture the social dynamics of this region and to verify selected components of theories of borders and borderlands.
