Strategy and Tactics in the Armies of the Early Plantagenets: from Henry II to John Lackland
Abstract
Celem niniejszej rozprawy jest szczegółowa analiza założeń strategii i manewrów taktycznych stosowanych przez pierwszych królów Anglii z dynastii Plantagenetów oraz wykazanie ich nowatorstwa w tym zakresie. Prezentowana dysertacja ma wykazać zarówno ciągłość rozwoju wojskowości normańskiej, jak również odrębność sposobu prowadzenia działań wojennych. Praca podzielona jest na 9 rozdziałów z podrozdziałami. Wstęp omawia zakres badawczy, źródła oraz dotychczasowy stan badań historiografii na temat wojskowości anglonormańskiej XII i początku XIII w. Rozdział I prezentuje genezę wojskowości Plantagenetów od X do połowy XII wieku, od wojskowości anglosaskiej po normańską oraz andegaweńska. Rozdział II koncentruje się na teorii wojskowości, czerpiącej z dzieł poświeconych zagadnieniom militarnym. Rozdział III poświecony jest formacjom piechoty w armiach pierwszych Plantagenetów. W rozdziale IV skoncentrowano się na roli oddziałów konnych rycerzy i sierżantów. Rozdział V ukazuje zjawisko rosnącego znaczenia formacji najemników w armiach andegaweńskich królów Anglii. W rozdziale VI przedstawiono strategiczne znacznie fortyfikacji w obronności państwa Plantagenetów, skupiając się na twierdzach królestwa Anglii i księstwa Normandii. Rozdział VII prezentuje taktykę prowadzenia działań oblężniczych. W rozdziale VIII poddaje się analizie kampanie prowadzone w Normandii przez Henryka II (w latach 1173-1174), Ryszarda Lwie Serce (1193-1195) oraz upadek księstwa Normandii za panowania króla Jana bez Ziemi (1203-1204). Rozdział IX omawia zagadnienia: liczebności armii, logistyki, roli floty w działaniach wojennych oraz wywiad. Na koniec przedstawiono wielką strategię Plantagenetów. W zakończeniu odniesiono się do ogólnych wniosków odpowiadając na pytanie: w jakim stopniu wojskowość Plantagenetów była nowatorska na tle ówczesnej Europy Zachodniej?
The detailed analysis of the assumptions of strategy and innovative tactical manoeuvres, used by the kings of England from Plantagenet dynasty, are the main subject of this dissertation. Presented thesis demonstrate, both continuity of development of Norman warfare and separate way of conducting warfare. The work is divided into 9 chapters with subsections. The introduction contains research scope together with sources and current state of historiography researches about Anglo-Norman warfare from the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century. Chapter I presents the genesis of Plantagenet’s military service from the 10th by the middle of the 12th centuries, referring Anglo-Saxon, Norman and Angevin warfare. Chapter II focuses on the military theory based on studies devoted to the military researches. Chapter III elaborates the infantry formations in the first Plantagenets’s armies, whereas the next part (chapter IV) presents the role of mounted troops, knights and sergeants. Section V depicts phenomenon of the growing importance of mercenary formations in the armies of the Angevin kings of England, and in the next one we present the strategic importance of the fortifications that were to defeat the Plantagenet’s state, first of all focusing on the strongholds of the Kingdom of England and the Duchy of Normandy. Chapter VII presents the tactics of conducting siege operations. In the next part there is analized campaigns in Normandy conducted by Henry II (in 1173-1174), Richard Lionheart (1193-1195) and fall of the Duchy of Normandy during the reign of the king John Lackland (1203-1204). Finally, the last section (IX) discusses the issues of: the size of armies, their logistics, the role of contemporary fleet in warfare and the military intelligence. At the end there is presented the grand strategy of the Plantagenets. In conclusion we try to answer the question: to what extent at that time the warfare of the Plantagenet’s was innovative against the Western Europe’s strategy?
