The article describes Arnobius, a rhetorician at Sicca Veneria, a pagan who, from fear of the final
condemnation, converted to Christianity. An analysis of his work Adversus Nationes indicates that,
to him, the secret of eternal happiness lies in immortality, which can only be achieved through care
for the salvation of the soul. Rational contemplation of God in the earthly life is a basic prerequisite
of that salvation.
