Motivations of using drugs in circles of polish elites since the mid-nineteenth century to year 1939
Abstract
Podstawowym zagadnieniem poruszonym w niniejszej rozprawie doktorskiej jest zjawisko zażywania narkotyków w polskiej kulturze. Czas historyczny uwzględniony w pracy to okres od połowy XIX wieku do 1939 roku. Autorka uważa, że wzrost popularności narkotyków rozpoczął się w połowie XIX wieku. Narkotyki stały się wówczas popularnym tematem publikacji medycznych oraz częstym motywem poczytnych utworów literackich. Książki te przyczyniły się do stworzenia nowego typy bohatera literackiego – “narkomana – intelektualisty”. Wybuch II wojny światowej kończy omawiany okres, ze względu na zmianę motywacji zażywania narkotyków obserwowanych w tym czasie oraz rozbicie dotychczasowych elit państwa. Niniejsza rozprawa obejmuje elity: medyczne, wojskowe, urzędnicze oraz artystyczne. W kręgach tych elit zażywanie narkotyków było najbardziej popularne i najlepiej udokumentowane. Autorka skupia się na ukazaniu charakterystyki i efektów tego zjawiska w literaturze oraz prywatnym życiu elit polskich.
The primary object of this doctorate is an investigation of the phenomenon of using drugs in polish culture. The doctorate concerns the historical period since the mid-nineteenth century to 1939 year. The author regards that the popularity of drugs began in the mid-nineteenth century. Drugs became popular topic of medical publications and often motive of literary works. This books contributed to the creation of the new type of hero – „drug addict – intellectualist“. The outbreak of the World War II ends the considered period because in that time changed the motivation for using drugs and elites were broken up. This work includes medical, military, artistic and clerical elites. In the circles of these elites using drugs were the most popular and the most documented. The author focuses on showing characteristics and effects of this phenomen in literary sphere and private life of polish elite.
