South-Eastern Balkans during the IVth millennium BC: Millennium of many unknowns
Abstract
W niniejszej pracy podejmowano zagadnienia przemian kulturowo-społecznych na południowo-wschodnich Bałkanach w trakcie IV tys. Zasadniczym celem było rozpoznanie kwestii ciągłości/nieciągłości w uwarunkowaniach kulturowych oraz osadniczych oraz określenie roli społeczeństw stepowych w kształtowaniu się sytuacji kulturowo-społecznej we wspomnianej strefie. Analizę rozpoczęto od scharakteryzowania warunków środowiskowych i klimatycznych oraz określono skalę antropopresji na środowisko pod koniec okresu atlantyckiego i na początku subborealnego. Następnie podsumowano obecny stan badań nad zagadnieniami społeczno-kulturowymi w IV tys. Obejmował on kwestie chronologii, taksonomii, periodyzacji oraz synchronizacji międzyregionalnej analizowanych w pracy zjawisk. Zwrócono przy tym szczególną uwagę na zarysowanie ważniejszych koncepcji dotyczących poszukiwania przyczyn transformacji kulturowo-społecznych w przedmiotowym milenium. Następnie omówiono wybrane zjawiska kulturowe, w celu wykazania ciągłości-nieciągłości kulturowej oraz scharakteryzowano wytwórczość ceramiczną kultur IV tys. w celu selekcji najbardziej diagnostycznych typów użytych następnie w analizach zmierzających do ustalenia skali zjawiska hiatusu osadniczego i tzw. „horyzontu pożarowego” na osadach tellowych pod koniec epoki miedzi (koniec V tys,). Konkluzją tych analiz jest stwierdzenie, że oba wydarzenia nie były homogennym zjawiskiem w skali przestrzennej i czasowej, a także nie były efektem jednego procesu kulturowego – agresywnej infiltracji analizowanej strefy przez społeczeństwa z północnego Nadczarnomorza.
In this thesis, there were addressed some issues concerning cultural and social changes in south-eastern Balkans in the 4th millennium BC. The main purpose was to prove whether there has been a continuity or discontinuity in cultural and settlement development and to determine in what extent the steppe communities took part in the formation of cultural and social situation in mentioned area. The outline of environmental conditions and the scale of anthopogenic impact on the environment at the end of the Atlantic and the early Subboreal periods opens the first part of this dissertation. Subsequently, the current state of research on socio-cultural issues during that millennium, has been presented. This outline also included chronology, taxonomy, periodisation and interregional synchronization of events described in this thesis. The particular attention has been paid to explore causes of cultural and social transformations in the 4th millennium. Additionally, some selected cultural phenomena have been discussed in order to demonstrate continuity or discontinuity in cultural development. In order to select the most diagnostic pottery categories and stylistic features that subsequently were used in the analysis aimed to determining the scale of the so called settlement hiatus and “fire horizon” on the tell sites at the end of Copper Age in Balkan terms (late 5th millennium), the ceramic material of cultures belonging to the 4th millennium has been characterized. The conclusion of this analysis is that the two above mentioned events were not a homogeneous phenomenon spatially and temporally, and were not the result of one cultural process - the aggressive infiltration of steppe people from northern Black Sea area.
