Mauricii Strategikon; a practical manual of military tactics and an antiquarian work
Abstract
Niniejszy projekt obejmuje dwa obszerne, a zarazem powiązane ze sobą aspekty historii późnego antyku. Już sam tytuł: Mauricii Strategicon; praktyczny podręcznik wojskowy i dzieło antykwaryczne wskazuje, że obiektem badań będzie zarówno historia wojskowości, jak i literatury przełomu wieków VI i VII.
Strategikon, autorstwa Maurycjusza, uważany jest za jedno z najważniejszych źródeł opisujących stan Cesarstwa Wschodniorzymskiego u schyłku VI wieku. Traktat przypisywany cesarzowi Maurycjuszowi, stanowi niewyczerpalne źródło informacji o armii rzymskiej w trakcie wielkich reform. Dzięki drobiazgowym instrukcjom dla wyższej kadry oficerskiej możemy odtworzyć strukturę legionów, ich skład społeczny, uzbrojenie, a nawet komendy wydawane w trakcie marszu. Strategikon jest jedynym źródłem opisującym armię bizantyńską w okresie transformacji z legionów rzymskich w armię temową. Obok przemian w armii, traktat zawiera cenne wskazówki dotyczące administracji państwa. Znaczenie Strategikonu jest tym większe, że po inwazji arabskiej nastaje okres, w którym nie mamy praktycznie żadnych informacji o stanie armii bizantyńskiej.
Wykonane badania dowiodły, że autor traktatu w wyjątkowy sposób połączył elementy antykwaryczne i erudycyjne z użytkowymi. Dzięki analizom źródeł greckich i łacińskich udało się zidentyfikować część autorów antycznych, którzy inspirowali pracę Maurycjusza.
This project deals with two major and at the same time closely related aspects of the history of late antiquity. The title itself (Mauricii Strategicon; a practical manual of military tactics and an antiquarian work) makes it clear that the subject of my study will be both the military history as well as the history of literature at the turn of the sixth century. Strategikon by Mauricius is believed to be one of the most important sources describing the state of the East Roman Empire at the turn of the 6th century. The treatise attributed to Mauricius remains an inexhaustible source of information concerning the Roman Army in the period when crucial reforms were implemented. Thanks to detailed instructions for the senior officer cadre we are able to reconstruct the structure of the legions, their social composition, weaponry, an even the commands that were issued on the march. Strategikon is the only historical source that deals with the Byzantine army in the period of transformation from the Roman legions into the thematic army. Apart from information about the evolution of the armed forces the treatise also gives valuable instructions concerning the administration of the state. The significance of Strategikon becomes even greater if we consider that after the Arab invasion there comes a period from which we do not have any information about the state of the Byzantine army.
