Imaginigs and visualisations as identity signs exampled by the space of Bielsko-Biała city
Abstract
Głównym założeniem tej pracy jest pogląd, że właściwości kulturowe danej grupy społecznej mają swoje odzwierciedlenie w zajmowanej przez nią przestrzeni. W rezultacie mamy do czynienia z pewnymi zjawiskami semiotycznymi, które zostały podzielone tu na dwa obszary badawcze: wyobrażenia i wizualizacje. Rozdział pierwszy opisuje główne zagadnienia wyrażone także w tytule pracy. W drugim rozdziale scharakteryzowane są wyobrażenia związane ze wspomnieniami oraz fantazjami dotyczącymi przyszłości miasta. Myślenie symboliczne o mieście związane jest z uniwersalnymi kategoriami, organicznymi i mechanicznymi metaforami. Osobno omówioną kategorią wyobrażeń są mapy mentalne, które rozpatrywane są w dwóch skalach. W skali ogólnej miasto porównywane jest do Wiednia, Berlina i Manchesteru. W małej skali ujawniają się fragmenty konstruowane na bazie osobistych doświadczeń.
Dalsza uwaga poświęcona jest zewnętrznym reprezentacjom wizualnym, w szczególności graffiti. Ponadto przestrzeń miejska jest miejscem rozmaitych manifestacji i aktów symbolicznych, które omówione są w rozdziale szóstym. Ostatnia część poświęcona jest szacie ideologicznej miasta i zachodzącym w niej zmianom. Metaforyka miejskiej przestrzeni jako palimpsestu wydaje się być tutaj niezwykle trafna.
The most general assumption of the dissertation is the view that cultural qualities of a particular social group are manifested within the space they use. As a result, we are dealing with cultural, semiotic phenomena which are divided within the two fields. The first are imaginings, the second are visualizations - available to visual perception. First chapter describes research problems by providing explanations to ideas being expressed in the main title of the dissertation. The second chapter characterizes individual and collective memory, fantasies about the city in the future. Symbolic thinking about urban space is connected with universal categories, organistic and mechanistic methaphors. Another category of space imaginings are mental maps within two different scales. In general city is being compared to Vienna, Berlin and Manchester. Singular variants referring to particular fragments of the city connected with the sensual experience. Further attention has paid to external representations, available to visual perception. The main research object considered for such type of phenomena is graffiti. Moreover, urban space reveals variety of individual and collective symbolic acts in form of street marches and manifestations, what describes chapter sixth. The last part of the dissertation describes ideological layout in the city. Layer by layer, pictures and imaginings superimpose onto each other. The metaphor of a city as a palimpsest in the aspect of visual semiotic phenomena is inspiring and accurate.
