Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to make a linguistic description of aphorisms that dominate the prose of Olga Tokarczuk, being one of the aspects of her style. These aphorisms partly correspond to the traditional notion of aphorism as a genre formed on the basis of Polish studies in linguistics and literature which are principally based on the analysis of Polish literary works. However, many of Olga Tokarczuk’s aphorisms definitely do not match the common idea of what an aphorism is and vary from its existing definitions. There are no aphorisms more than one or two sentences long in the Polish tradition of this genre, whereas in Germany - one of the motherlands of aphorism, the 19th- century literature gave way to the rise of a long aphorism that goes beyond the strictly defined frames. Aphorisms of this type dominate the prose of Olga Tokarczuk. At the core of my analysis are the works of German scientists Harald Fricke and Peter Krupka, because their researches cover the model of aphorism that hasn’t been created by Polish writers. In addition to this, my research is also focused on semantic role of the aphorisms integrated with the narration of Olga Tokarczuk’s works. I’m interested in analyzing aphorism as an autonomous genre, autonomous semantic unit, as well as in analyzing its lexical structure, the level of its metарhоrіcalmess, its sociolectal and idiolectal characteristics, its semantic relations shown in the semantic context of the world of a given work (to which this aphorism belongs), and also in relation to the Polish language viewed as its work material.
