The poetics of the contemporary American graphic novel
Abstract
Celem pracy jest analiza współczesnej amerykańskiej powieści graficznej w szerokim kontekście związków słowa i obrazu. Powieść graficzna to heterosemiotyczne dzieło sztuki łączące elementy tekstowe i wizualne w celu opowiedzenia historii. Powieść graficzna nie może funkcjonować jako tylko i wyłącznie „tekst” lub „obraz”, ponieważ to unikalna relacja pomiędzy tymi dwoma elementami stanowi o wyjątkowości powieści graficznej zarówno jako medium, jak i dzieła sztuki. W pracy badam charakter i poetykę korelacji słowa i obrazu we współczesnej amerykańskiej powieści graficznej, z naciskiem na strukturę, proces i strategie czytania. Dowodzę, że znaczenie we współczesnej powieści graficznej jest negocjowane i dynamicznie (re)konstruowane w perspektywie sekwencyjności, przełamywania sekwencyjności oraz intertekstualności. Analizy prowadzone są w ujęciu strukturalnym, tj. odnoszą się do budowy, werbalnych i wizualnych elementów narracyjnych, oraz wykorzystania poetyki intertekstualnej. Proponowane przez mnie ujęcie pozwala na badanie współczesnej amerykańskiej powieści graficznej jako szerszego zjawiska, które można opisać i zanalizować w sposób systematyczny. Jak dowodzę w swojej rozprawie, współczesna amerykańska powieść graficzna to nurt o ustalonej poetyce, która, choć ukształtowała się pod wpływem relacji łączących ją z powieścią tradycyjną, komiksem oraz innymi formami narracji wizualnej, zdecydowanie się od nich różni.
This thesis undertakes a formal exploration of the contemporary American graphic novel in the general context of word and image relations. As heterosemiotic works of art, graphic novels combine the verbal and the visual to convey the storyline. The graphic novel cannot function as “pure” text or “pure” image and it is the relation between the two that lends the graphic novel its unique characteristics as a medium and an art form. It is the very nature and poetics of the correlation between the two that I investigate, asking questions about the graphic novel’s structure, mechanics, and reading strategies. I argue that meaning in the contemporary American graphic novel is negotiated, constructed, and reconstructed in the perspective of three major aspects: sequentiality, challenges to sequentiality, and intertextual relations. Given the above premises, the thesis is an attempt to examine the problem of the poetics of the contemporary American graphic novel in innovative and systematic terms. By focusing on the structure of the graphic novel, i.e. sequentiality, verbal and visual narrative elements, format, and the self-conscious and idiosyncratic use of intertextual references, I highlight what is unique about the poetics of the form per se. The contemporary American graphic novel is defined as an inherently complex structure which rests on the idea of continuous innovation and development.
