    The Play With Genre: Knut Hamsun’s ''I Æventyrland'' (1903)

    The purpose of this study is to explore Knut Hamsun’s I Æventyrland. Oplevet og drømt i Kaukasien (1903) as a text that interacts with some of the structural elements specific to the genre of travel literature. I have limited the investigation to the writer’s use of comparative rhetoric on a formal level, and to the function of conventional character types, with respect to content. The evaluation of these aspects of the narrative is undertaken with the aim of highlighting Hamsun’s awareness of and engagement with the tradition of travel writing and his talent for challenging its norms.

    ”Der er langt til Himlen og Evropa er langt borte”. Den afrikanske diskurs i dansk rejselitteratur

    The article attempts to discuss two examples of Danish literary discourse on former Danish colonies on the Gold Coast (Africa). Sophie Petersen’s travel books “Danmarks gamle Tropekolonier”, 1946 (The former Danish Tropic Colonies) and “Vore gamle Tropekolonier”, 1948 (Our former Tropic Colonies) and Thorkild Hansen’s documentary novel “Slavernes Kyst”, 1967 (The Coast of the Slaves) have been analyzed as texts that re- veal a part of the Danish colonial and postcolonial (self-)reflection and consciousness. The literary representations of Africa given in the aforementioned books reflect the Danish nation-building project in the respective historical, political and mental contexts (during the Second World War and in the sixties). Petersen and Hansen apply different writing strategies (rhetorical as well as discursive) in their presentations of the Danish history of the Gold Coast, and they seem to represent rather dissimilar approaches to this topic. As a conclusion, the author of the article attempts to answer the question about the role of the African representations in the Danish self-understanding as a nation.

    Bibliographie der skandinavischen Forschungen an der Universität Breslau in der Periode 1811-1945

    The reason for this bibliography was the 200th Anniversary of the founding of Germanic Study at the University of Wrocław. The bibliography includes publications published in the period 1811-1945. In the list are there publications, which originated in the seminar for German Philology, and in the seminar for Romanic and English philology and consider the problems of the Scandinavian countries and their languages and cultures. They were listed in chronological-alphabetical order. As an additional criterion is the character of the publication. First are books cited – monographs and academic textbooks, then articles, reviews and translations.

    A Runic Prayer

    Contrary to modern view of the runes as symbols and bearers of pagan traditions, the mediaeval runic inscriptions found in Scandinavia bear witness of making use of the indigenous alphabet to serve the new religion, Christianity. In this paper a number of inscriptions are analyzed with respect to the prayer formula that typically is a part of a text commemorating the dead. Different runic masters are found to have been more or less theologically educated in the tenets of the new religion. The prayer formulas show a changing society, reorienting from the pagan traditions towards the christian ones.

    Zur Textualität der dänischen Grabinschriften

    This article analyses the standards of textuality (according to Beaugrande & Dressler 1981) of the Danish funerary inscriptions. The basis of the test is a corpus of 250 grave inscriptions arising in the period 1770-2003 from Copenhagen cemetery Assistens Kirkegård. The first part of the paper bases on the seven criteria of textuality: cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality, and intertextuality. In the second part the study focuses on illocutionary structure and communicative functions and leads to the conclusion that the examined speech genre includes the most of the illocutionary speech acts: assertives, commissives, expressives and directives.

    On Apologizing in Norwegian

    This paper discusses selected points concerning the verbal realization of the speech act of apology in Norwegian. It sets out to establish prevailing tendencies in the choice of apology strategies applied by the native speakers of Norwegian. The present findings, which seem to indicate that Norwegian apology strategies are fairly routinized, ought to be perceived as preliminary as a more detailed analysis of apology formulae will be presented in an upcoming article.

    Det individuella möter det kollektiva. Självbiografiskt stoff i barndomsskildringar från det svenska folkhemmet

    The subject of the article are autobiographical threads present in Swedish stories about childhood and adolescence published after 1986 that form part of the narrative pertaining to the origins, evolution and decline of the Swedish welfare state (folkhemmet). With reference to such concepts as autobiographical pact, autobiographical novel and auto-fiction, the author discusses the various ways six contemporary Swedish writers (PC Jersild, Kjell Johansson, Susanna Alakoski, Jonas Gardell and Lena Andersson) use their biographies. Special focus is given to the notion of how a cogitation upon individual fate becomes universal when placed in a social context. Another problem analysed by the author is the significance of autobiographical threads for building relationships between the writer and the reader and for the reception of a literary text.
