Cultural framework of modern genetics

Abstract

The aim of the study is to discover the mechanism behind the cultural grammar of the matter of life at its biological micro-level. The study assumes that the place of genetics in the symbolic order of the modern world is determined by the relationship between the system and the lifeworld. The proposed hypothesis is derived from a comparative analysis of the theories of the first and second generation of the Frankfurt School, and can be employed to explain the normative limits of modern genetics, which determine the position of humanity in relation to science. This position is reflected in the structure of the presented study, which consists of five chapters. The aim of the first chapter is to outline the dispute between the representatives of two generations of the Frankfurt School; this justifies adopting Habermas’ conceptualization of the social dimension of knowledge concerning the hereditary nature of the matter of life. The second chapter delineates the methodological basis of the study, combining the selected approach to the discovered mechanism with a cultural studies perspective that allows its verification. The third chapter is devoted to a reflection on the functional conditions of social practice by tracking the history of knowledge concerning inheritance – from the birth of an ancient idea to the contemporary application of modern genetics. The fourth chapter leads this reflection towards interpretation of social practice, allowing the heterogeneous set of beliefs that accompanies the reception of genetics to be outlined. The fifth chapter attempts to interpret the normative limits of the functioning of scientific knowledge, paying attention to the meaning of norms encoded both in the system and the modern lifeworld.
