Cobalt(II) complexes with Schiff base ligands as new pre-catalysts for hydrosilylation of alkenes and alkynes

Abstract

Hydrosililowanie to jeden z najważniejszych procesów przemysłowych. Druga i trzecia praca opisuje aktywność katalityczną kompleksów kobaltu(II) w reakcji hydrosililowania alkinów. Aktywowane kompleksy zostały zdefiniowane jako katalizatory efektywnego i selektywnego hydrosililowania. Ostatnia praca prezentuje zastosowanie trietylohydroboranu sodu jako katalizatora reakcji dehydrogenującego sililowania. Reakcje alkinów z wodorosilanami w obecności trietylohydroboranu sodu prowadzą do selektywnego otrzymania produktów dehydrogenującego sprzęgania. Powyższe obserwacje sugerują potrzebę dogłębnych badań w przypadku aktywacji kompleksów metali przejściowych poprzez trialkilohydroborany.
Hydrosilylation is one of the most important catalytic reactions used on industrial scale. The catalysts used in this process are platinum based, however, it’s high price of and negative impact on the environment have prompted the search for alternative solutions. One idea proposed to solve this problem was to use catalysts based on the earth abundant metals. On the other hand, it is essential to develop a rational and sustainable coordination environment. The doctoral dissertation is a combination of these two ideas – the use earth abundant cobalt complexes with Schiff base ligands as catalysts for the hydrosilylation. The first paper presents the syntheses of cobalt(II) complexes with Schiff base ligands. The complexes were applied as pre-catalysts in the hydrosilylation of alkenes. The study has shown that obtained compounds, when activated by lithium triethylborohydride, act as a good catalysts for β-selective hydrosilylation. The second and third papers describe the catalytic activity of cobalt(II) complexes in the alkynes hydrosilylation. Activated complexes, have been found to act as very good catalysts for regioselective hydrosilylation. The effectiveness of the catalytic process at extremely low catalyst loading has pointed out the uniqueness of the developed systems. The last article presents sodium triethylborohydride-catalysed C(sp)–H bond silylation. The reaction of alkynes with hydrosilanes led to the synthesis of dehydrogenative coupling products. This observation suggest the need for complex analysis of the reaction pathway on which the metal pre-catalysts are activated by metal borohydrides.
