Around the treshold. Problem of transgression in prose of polish Romanticism
Abstract
Praca doktorska Wokół progu. Problem transgresji w prozie niesamowitej polskiego romantyzmu napisana została pod kierunkiem prof. dr hab. Antoniego Smuszkiewicza i z inspiracji metodą badawczą Marii Janion, nazwaną krytyką fantazmatyczną. Rozprawa poświęcona jest rodzimej fantastyce grozy, tworzonej w latach 1800-1863. W prologu do rozprawy przedstawiono historię badań nad fantastyką grozy, najważniejsze definicje oraz stanowiska znanych uczonych, a także opowieść niesamowitą w perspektywie antropologicznej. Część pierwszą pracy, zatytułowaną Próg, poświęcono przestrzeniom nawiedzonym, pojawiającym się w badanej literaturze. Część druga, pod tytułem Na progu, poświęcona jest typowym ludzkim bohaterom omawianej prozy. Podzieleni są na część męską i kobiecą. W tej części pracy korzystano z krytyki feministycznej. Zakończenie drugiej części poświęcone jest stanom (kondycjom), w jakie popadają często bohaterowie fantastyki grozy. Tu zająłem się wydanym anonimowo opowiadaniem Lunatyczka, z ważną rolą muzyki w fabule, któremu, dzięki przeprowadzonym badaniom, przypisałem autorstwo Włodzimierza Wolskiego. Ostatnia, trzecia część, zatytułowana Za progiem, dotyczy bytów spoza naszej rzeczywistości, stanowiących istotę omawianej literatury. W Zakończeniu podsumowano efekty badań i wskazano punkty dla dalszych analiz naukowych.
PhD thesis Wokół progu. Problem transgresji w prozie niesamowitej polskiego romantyzmu has been written under the direction of Prof. Dr. hab. Antoni Smuszkiewicz and inspired by a research method developed by Maria Janion, called phantasmatic criticism. The dissertation presents unknown or insufficiently known domestic dark fantasy created in 1800-1863. The history of research on gothic fantasy literature, the most significant definitions and theories by well-known researchers are presented in the dissertation’s prologue. The first part of the thesis is titled “The Threshold” and tells about haunted places described in analyzed literature. Separate section presents the roles of water and fire, elements which were often used by authors of gothic/dark fantasy.The dissertation’s second part, “On the threshold” describes typical human characters of the literature concerned. I have divided them to male and female. In this part I used feminist criticism. In conclusion of the second part I describe states dark fantasy characters frequently fall into. Here I have analysed the anonymous novel “Lunatyczka” (“The Sommnabulist”) in plot of which music plays an important role. Research I have carried out allowed me to ascribe authorship of the novel to Wiesław Wolski. The last, third part, entitled “Behind the threshold” concerns supernatural creatures, that constitute the essence of the literature in questionIn the conclusion of the thesis I have summarized the results of my own researches and indicated issues for further scientific analyses.
