Dynamism in space and space dynamics: The influence of the new physics and technology on space-time imagery in selected literary works of American modernist writers of the 1940s and 1950s
Abstract
Rozprawa stanowi próbę zgłębienia intermedialnej relacji między osiągnięciami naukowymi i technologicznymi z pierwszej poł. XX w. a literaturą, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wpływu teorii względności Einsteina oraz eksploracji przestrzeni kosmicznej na kreowanie światów przedstawionych w wybranych utworach prozy amerykańskiej późnego modernizmu lat 40. i 50. XX w. Zmiana paradygmatu naukowego za sprawą przełomowej publikacji Einsteina z 1905 r. początkuje rewolucję naukowo-kulturową, a intensyfikacja działań popularyzujących naukę w latach 20. XX w. otwiera stały dialog między myślą ścisłą a naukami humanistycznymi. Dialog ten przeżywa szczególne ożywienie w latach 40. i 50. przyczyniając się do budowania nowej wrażliwości na percepcję czasu i przestrzeni w literaturze. Analiza wybranych utworów prozy amerykańskiej z lat 40. i 50. XX w. pozwala stwierdzić, że związek literatury z naukami ścisłymi sięga dalej niż wskazywałyby na to opracowania utworów science fiction powstałych we wskazanym okresie. Wybrane utwory wiodących amerykańskich autorów lat 40. i 50. XX w. noszą wyraźne znamiona wpływu nowej fizyki oraz technicyzacji życia i wojny na sposób kształtowania literackich światów wyobrażonych. Mechanizmy wpływu nauki na literaturę zostały zbadane przy pomocy narzędzi metodologicznych zaczerpniętych z „The order of discourse” Foucaulta. Subiektywna percepcja rzeczywistości, rozwarstwianie się światów przedstawionych na nakładające się na siebie, a mimo to autonomiczne czasoprzestrzenie z osobną ramą odniesień, czas jako fenomen wewnętrznie niespójny, alternatywne wymiary czasu, a także motyw ciała ludzkiego jako mikrokosmosu, stanowią główną oś tematyczną przedstawionych w dysertacji badań.
The dissertation constitutes an attempt to explore the intermedial relationship between the new scientific and technological achievements from the first half of the 20th century and literature. Special focus is placed on the influence of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and outer space exploration on the creation of literary space-time imagery in selected works of American late modernist prose of the 1940s and 1950s. The paradigm shift induced by Einstein’s groundbreaking publication from 1905 ignited both scientific and socio-cultural revolution initiating an ongoing dialogue between scientific thought and humanities. The dialogue enters the period of revival in the 1940s and 1950s with the Renaissance of the Theory of Relativity, which awakens new sensitivities in ordinary perception and literary representation space-time. The analysis of selected works of American prose from the 1940s and 1950s proves that the relationship between literature and science is internally complex and goes beyond the scope covered by the studies exploring science fiction texts from late modernist period. Selected works by some of the leading American authors of the 1940s and 1950s, exhibit characteristics of the influence of new physics and space exploration on literary space-time imagery. New scientific findings are brought into literature by discourse series oscillating around the Theory of Relativity and other related scientific advancements. Hence, the mechanisms of the influence of science on selected works of American late modernist prose is analyzed in the study within the conceptual framework of Foucauldian discourse analysis presented in "The order of discourse”. Subjective perception of space, stratification of the represented worlds into overlapping, yet autonomous space-times with separate frames of reference, time as an internally incoherent phenomenon, alternative dimensions of time, and the microcosm of human body constitute the main thematic axes of the research.
