Abstract
Considering the current state of knowledge about Gastrotricha, their unprecise phylogeny, the lack of knowledge about their morphology, and the evolution of their characteristics, the main aim of my work is to enhance our knowledge on gastrotrich evolution as well as to integrate them in a phylogenetic context with the construction of the natural systematics within Chaetonotidae. To achieve this goal, I studied chaetonotidian diversity from various geographical regions and habitat types based on morphological, morphometric and molecular data, with particular emphasis on evolutionary aspects of character diversification. I also focused on the new approaches to the taxonomy of gastrotrichs and their inclusion in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
In the eight parts in this thesis, I describe one new genus namely Bifidochaetus gen. nov. and 16 species that are new to science i.e. Bifidochaetus arcticus sp. nov., Chaetonotus (Chaetonotus) antrumus sp. nov., C. (C.) jaceki sp. nov., C. (C.) gelidus sp. nov., C. (C.) svalbardi sp. nov., C. (C.) bombardus sp. nov., C. (C.) subtilis sp. nov., C. (Hystricochaetonotus) borealis sp. nov., C. (H.) hornsundi sp. nov., C. (H.) persimilis sp. nov., Chaetonotus (Chaetonotus) invitatus sp. nov., C. (H.) horridus sp. nov., C. (H.) inaequabilis sp. nov., C. (Wolterecka) semovitus sp. nov., Lepidodermella polaris sp. nov. and Turbanella pilosum sp. nov. I also show the presence of C. (C.) paucisquamatus Kisielewski, 1991 and C. (Zonochaeta) cestacanthus Balsamo, 1990 for the first time outside their terra typica.
