Democratic author in search for truth and freedom - Philip K. Dick's fiction and its movie adaptations in light of Alexis de Tocqueville's thought
Abstract
Celem rozprawy jest ukazanie, iż tezy Alexisa de Tocqueville’a dotyczące kształtu literatury w ustroju demokratycznym są istotne dla analizy dzieł Philipa K. Dicka oraz ich adaptacji filmowych. Tematem wspólnym dla analizy obu typu tekstów jest poszukiwanie prawdy i wolności, które jest jedną z cech definiujących Philipa K. Dicka jako pisarza demokratycznego. Omawiane dzieła Philipa K. Dicka oraz ich adaptacje filmowe służą również za przykład tego, jak demokracja wpływa na kształt i charakter amerykańskiej sztuki. Rozprawa składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest teoriom adaptacji filmowych. W rozdziale tym szczególny nacisk położony jest na adaptacje tekstów literackich oraz na możliwość zidentyfikowania autora adaptacji filmowej. Drugi oraz trzeci rozdział opisują pokrótce życie i twórczość Philipa K. Dicka przez pryzmat teorii głoszonych przez Alexisa de Tocqueville’a, dotyczących demokratycznych autorów. Rozdział ostatni omawia motyw niebezpiecznej, choć pożądanej prawdy oraz dążenie do wolności i niezależności który pojawia się zarówno w dziełach Philipa K. Dicka jak i w ich adaptacjach filmowych.
The goal of the dissertation is to show that the theses of Alexis de Tocqueville concerning the shape of literature in a democracy are relevant to the analysis of Philip K. Dick’s works and their film adaptations. The subject analyzed in both types of texts is the search for truth and freedom, which is one of the traits defining Philip K. Dick as a democratic writer. The discussed works of Philip K. Dick and their film adaptations are presented as an example of how democracy influenced their authors, and thus how it affects the shape and character of American art. The dissertation is composed of four chapters. The first chapter discusses a variety of theories concerning film adaptations. What is emphasized are the adaptations of literary texts and the possibility of identifying the author of a movie adaptation. The second and third chapters briefly describe the life and works of Philip K. Dick in the light of Alexis de Tocqueville’s thought concerning democratic authors. The final chapter discusses the motive of dangerous, albeit much desired, truth and the aspiration for freedom and independence which is a common trait of the works of Philip K. Dick and in their film adaptations.
