The philosophical thought of Witold Gombrowicz in the context of the French translation of his prose
Abstract
Pierwszym celem pracy jest zbadanie relacji między utworami prozatorskimi Witolda Gombrowicza a ich francuskimi przekładami, a drugim – ustalenie stosunku, jaki zachodzi między francuskimi tłumaczeniami a ich odbiorem we Francji. Krytyczna lektura, jako pierwsza metoda badawcza, pozwoli na wyodrębnienie i opis realiów, w których ukształtował się światopogląd Gombrowicza. Jako że punktem wyjścia i dojścia twórczości Gombrowicza jest filozoficzna koncepcja człowieka Gombrowiczowskiego, to właśnie ta koncepcja filozoficzna stanowi podstawę do wyodrębnienia kryteriów porównawczych oryginałów z francuskimi przekładami jego tekstów. Natomiast analiza porównawcza oryginałów utworów prozatorskich Gombrowicza z ich francuskimi przekładami stanowi drugą metodę. Pozwala ona na spełnienie pierwszego celu badawczego, jakim jest ustalenie charakteru francuskich przekładów utworów Gombrowicza względem oryginałów. Spełnienie celu drugiego, czyli opisanie korelacji między odbiorem Gombrowicza we Francji a charakterem jego utworów, nastąpi na bazie wyników z analizy porównawczej. Najważniejszym wnioskiem z przeprowadzonych badań jest duży stopień tożsamości w przekazie filozofii Gombrowicza po polsku oraz po francusku. Przekłady pozwalają w niemal równym stopniu na odczytanie filozoficznych treści, co oryginały.
The first aim of the study is to examine the degree of similarity between Witold Gombrowicz's prose works and their French translations, and the second is to establish the relationship between the French translations and their reception in France. A critical reading, as a first research method, will allow us to describe the realities in which Gombrowicz's worldview was formed. As the point of departure and arrival of Gombrowicz's work is Gombrowicz's philosophical conception of the man, it is this philosophical conception that provides the basis for distinguishing the comparative criteria of the originals with the French translations of his texts. The comparative analysis of original prose works with their French translations, on the other hand, constitutes the second method. It allows us to fulfil the first research aim, which is to establish the nature of the French translations of Gombrowicz's works in relation to the originals. The second aim, i.e. to describe the correlation between the reception of Gombrowicz in France and the character of his works, will be fulfilled on the basis of the results of the comparative analysis. The most important conclusion of the study is the high degree of identity in the transmission of Gombrowicz's philosophy in Polish and in French versions. The translations allow the philosophical content to be read almost as much as the originals.
