The geopolitical dimension of the rivalry between the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China after the Cold War
Abstract
Praca analizuje proces rywalizacji między Stanami Zjednoczonymi Ameryki i Chińską Republiką Ludową po zakończeniu zimnej wojny. Dynamiczny rozwój Chin z końca XX i początku XXI wieku, sprawił, że upatruje się w nich główne wyzwanie dla amerykańskiej dominacji, a stosunki obu państw postrzega się jako rywalizację mocarstwa dominującego z pretendentem do dominacji. Dokonująca się zmiana układa sił w świecie, uzasadnia upatrywanie w relacjach tych dwóch mocarstw najważniejszych stosunków dwustronnych XXI wieku, od których będzie zależał ład międzynarodowy w obecnym stuleciu. Jednocześnie, pomimo coraz wyraźniejszych znamion rywalizacji pomiędzy państwami występuje daleko posunięta współpraca. Głównymi celami pracy było: wyjaśnienie wzrostu znaczenia regionu Azji i Pacyfiku w świecie, scharakteryzowanie rywalizacji Stanów Zjednoczonych i Chin w wymiarze regionalnym i globalnym oraz określenie możliwych kierunków rozwoju relacji bilateralnych w przyszłości.
The dissertation analyzes the process of rivalry between the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China after the Cold War. China’s rapid development at the end of the 20th century and in the early years of the 21th has led to a situation in which China is perceived as the greatest challenge to American domination and thus the relations between both states are perceived as a rivalry between a dominant power and a state striving to reach that position. The changing balance of power allows to perceive these as the most important bilateral relations in the 21st century, on which the international order of the century will depend. At the same time, there is a very intensive cooperation going on in spite of increasingly clear symptoms of rivalry. The main objectives of this pare are: to explain the growing importance of Asia-Pacific in the world, to characterize regional and global dimensions of the United States and China rivalry and to predict possible directions in which bilateral relations will develop in the future.
