Złote pióra. Twórczość George’a MacDonalda, Jamesa Matthew Barriego oraz Cicely Mary Barker, jej polska recepcja i nowe przekłady

Abstract

Niniejsza rozprawa doktorska stawia przed sobą trzy cele naukowe: pierwszym jest stworzenie przekrojowego studium angielskiej klasyki literackiej dla dzieci „złotego wieku” oraz wprowadzenie i utrwalenie pojęcia „złotego wieku” na gruncie polskich badań nad literaturą dziecięcą oraz studiów nad jej przekładem. Drugim celem pracy jest przybliżenie biografii oraz twórczości trojga pisarzy reprezentujących różne fazy„złotego wieku”: G. MacDonalda, J.M. Barriego i C.M. Barker, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wybranych utworów ich autorstwa – At the Back of the North Wind (1871) MacDonalda, tekstów Barriego skupionych wokół postaci Piotrusia Pana (Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, 1906; Peter and Wendy, 1911; Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up, 1928) oraz The Lord of the Rushie River (1938) Barker. Wybór ten jest nieprzypadkowy – elementem łączącym wymienione dzieła jest między innymi motyw „podniebnych dzieci”, do którego nawiązuje zawarta w tytule pracy doktorskiej metafora „złotych piór”. Trzecim celem rozprawy jest zbadanie polskiej recepcji przekładowej dzieł MacDonalda, Barriego i Barker na tle ujętej w zarysie historii tłumaczeń tekstów należących do anglojęzycznej klasyki dziecięcej oraz stworzenia nowych przekładów ich dzieł, które w sposób praktyczny mają rozwinąć, uzupełnić lub wręcz rozpocząć polską recepcję przekładową ich utworów.

The present doctoral dissertation pursues three research objectives. Firstly, it provides a cross-sectional study of British children’s classics of the Golden Age; it also seeks to introduce and establish the concept of “the Golden Age literature” in the Polish academic discourse on juvenile literature and literary translation for children. The second objective of is to introduce the biographies and literary oeuvre of three writers representing different phases of the Golden Age: G. MacDonald, J.M. Barrie and C.M. Barker, with a particular focus on their selected works – MacDonald’s At the Back of the North Wind (1871), Barrie’s writings focusing on the figure of Peter Pan (Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, 1906; Peter and Wendy, 1911; Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up, 1928) and Barker’s The Lord of the Rushie River (1938). These works are linked by the motif of “flying children”, to which the metaphor of “the golden pens/feathers” in the title of the dissertation alludes. The third objective of the dissertation is to explore the Polish reception of the works of MacDonald, Barrie and Barker against the background of the broadly-viewed history of translations from English-language juvenile literature in Poland and create new translations of their literary works, which in a practical way are to develop, complement or even launch their Polish translational reception.
