Anthroponyms in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Quo Vadis and it’s Korean translations. Saved or lost in translation?
Abstract
Niniejsza rozprawa doktorska jest próbą
odpowiedzenia na pytanie jak zostały przełożone
nazwy osobowe Quo vadis Henryka Sienkiewicza na
język koreański, czy koreańskie ekwiwalenty
antroponimiczne zachowują te same funkcje
stylistyczne jak w tekście oryginału?
W zasobie antroponimów Quo vadis pojawiają się: 1.
nazwy autentyczne leksykalnie i denotacyjnie (nazwy
indywidualne i zbiorowe, czyli etnonimy), 2. nazwy
autentyczne leksykalnie ale nieautentyczne
denotacyjnie, 3. nazwy nieautentyczne, 4. nazwy
przynależne do kodu chrześcijańskiego oraz
mitologiczne oraz literackiego.
Antroponimy w przekładach koreańskich na ogół zostały ocalone, często dzięki zastosowanych techniki
szczególnie metatekstom. Stracone zostały natomiast
nazwy które zostały źle zapisane na alfabet
koreańskich (błędy ortograficzne), opuszczone w
tłumaczeniu, wymienione innymi nazwami
nienależącymi do danego denotatu, niewłaściwy
wybór ekwiwalentu znaczeniowego, etc.
Przy ocaleniu nazw ważna jest kompetencja
tłumacza, który oprócz kompetencji językowej i
kulturalnej języka wyjściowego i docelowego musi
posiadać kompleksową wiedzę o tematyce, czyli
antyku i chrześcijaństwie szczególnie o starożytnym i
chrześcijańskim nazewnictwie. Natomiast ostateczny
los nazw, zostać ocalone czy stracone w dużej mierze
należy do kompetencji odbiorców i ich wiedzy.
This thesis, presents how the anthroponyms (personal names) appearing in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Quo vadis were translated into Korean. This thesis shows the role of Korean translators and highlights the importance of translation competence. The collection of the anthroponyms contains: lexically and denotatively authentic names; names which are lexically authentic but not authentic denotatively; (not authentic) names created by author; names belonging to the world of Christianity, ancient mythologies and literature. Korean translators have transferred names by using existing forms of the onyms in Korean language or transliterate and transcript into Korean. They have also applied translation techniques, such as amplification, paraphrase, due to differences and limitations of language system. Anthroponyms were generally “saved” in the Korean translations, often through the use of aforementioned techniques and translator’s comments. Name were lost in translation when they were written incorrectly, omitted in the translation, replaced with other names not belonging to the denotatum. Translation competence plays a central role for “saving” names. Translators in addition to the linguistic and cultural competence must have a comprehensive knowledge on subject. However, the “final fate” of the names in large part is depend on the target text recipients and their knowledge.
