Loneliness in the spiritual life of a human being. Analytical study of the teachings of John Paul II
Abstract
W rozprawie poruszyłam temat samotności w życiu duchowym człowieka. Przeanalizowałam nauczanie Jana Pawła II, który wyróżnił samotność wybraną i wymuszoną. W pierwszym etapie opisałam przyczyny i formy samotności. Przyczyny osamotnienia mogą być indywidualne – wbrew woli człowieka, wynikające często z tragicznych doświadczeń, a także społeczne i gospodarcze czyli przymusowe wyjazdy z ojczyzny, globalizacja i urbanizacja. Wśród osób dotkniętych osamotnieniem są osoby chore, starsze, żyjące w separacji, rozwiedzione, owdowiałe, samotne matki, dzieci ulicy, emigranci, więźniowie, bezdomni i bezrobotni. Uwarunkowania samotności z wyboru mogą być psychologiczne, gdy człowiek chce doskonalić siebie oraz socjologiczne, kiedy poświęca się dla dobra innych. Stąd dwie postacie samotności dobrowolnej: powołanie do życia konsekrowanego i pustelniczego oraz życie samotne osób świeckich. W drugim etapie przeanalizowałam nauczanie papieskie dotyczące stworzenia człowieka na obraz Boga w kontekście samotności oraz kwestii człowieka samotnego w społeczeństwie. Trzeci etap rozprawy dotyczył znaczenia samotności w życiu duchowym człowieka i jej skutków pozytywnych i negatywnych. W ostatnim paragrafie omówiłam zjawisko samotności w życiu świętych. Ta część rozprawy może mieć największe znaczenie w zrozumieniu szansy, jaką daje przyjęta samotność i że mowa o jej wartości nie jest tylko teorią.
In my dissertation I raised the issue of loneliness in the spiritual life of a human being. I analyzed the teachings of John Paul II who distinguished forced and chosen loneliness. In the first stage, I described the reasons behind loneliness and forms of loneliness. The reasons for loneliness may be individual – against the person’s will, resulting from tragic experience but the reasons may also be social and economic, in other words compulsory emigration, globalization and urbanization. Among those affected by loneliness are ill people, the elderly, separated, divorced, widowed, lonely mothers, street children, emigrants and prisoners, homeless and unemployed. The circumstances behind loneliness by choice may be psychological, when a person wants to improve himself, and sociological, when he sacrifices himself for the others’ good. Hence there are two forms of voluntary loneliness: the call to consecrated and hermetic life as well as lonely life of lay people. In the second stage, I analyzed the teachings of John Paul II concerning the creation of man in God’s own image in the context of loneliness and the issue of a lonely person in society. The third stage concerned the meaning of loneliness in the spiritual life of a human being with its positive and negative effects. In the last paragraph, I discussed the phenomenon of loneliness in the lives of saints. This part might be the most significant in understanding the chance that adopted loneliness gives and that its value is not just a theory.
