The Charism of the Institute of Divine Mercy. Historical and Theological Study
Abstract
Instytut Miłosierdzia Bożego jest świecką wspólnotą życia konsekrowanego, której korzenie sięgają widzeń siostry Faustyny Kowalskiej i działalności jej wileńskiego spowiednika – ks. Michała Sopoćki. Celem niniejszej rozprawy było ukazanie charyzmatu, jakim żyje Instytut Miłosierdzia Bożego. Źródła niniejszej rozprawy stanowią dokumenty niemal w całości nieznane poza tą wspólnotą, które były przez lata gromadzone przez jej wieloletnią prezeskę – Ludmiłę Roszko, a obecnie są przechowywane przez jedną z członkiń. Wykorzystane zostały także materiały niepublikowane wcześniej, a znajdujące się w Archiwum Zgromadzenia Sióstr Jezusa Miłosiernego w Gorzowie Wielkopolskim (rękopis „Dziennika” Izabeli Naborowskiej, jednej z pierwszej wspólnoty nowego zgromadzenia zakonnego mającego głosić Miłosierdzie Boże, zwanego Wileńską Szóstką, która stała się współzałożycielką Zgromadzenia) i Archiwum Zgromadzenia Sióstr od Aniołów w Konstancinie – Jeziornej (rękopis „Dziennika” siostry Heleny Majewskiej, która - z woli swego spowiednika, ks. M. Sopoćki – opiekowała się Wileńską Szóstką w czasie, gdy on ukrywał się w Czarnym Borze), oraz częściowo znane z opracowań ks. dr. Henryka Ciereszki, jego biografa, dokumenty przechowywane w Archiwum Archidiecezji Białostockiej i Archiwum Kurii Archidiecezjalnej w Białymstoku. Wybór źródeł i zagadnienia zdeterminował metodę badawczą. Zastosowano metodę analityczno – syntetyczną polegającą na prezentacji procesu tworzenia się, rozwijania tej wspólnoty i wyodrębnienia oraz scharakteryzowania jej charyzmatu, a także metodę historyczną, mającą na celu przybliżenie kontekstu organizowania się i kształtowania owego Instytutu. Strukturę rozprawy tworzy pięć rozdziałów. W pierwszym zostały przybliżone uwarunkowania historyczne, społeczne, polityczne i religijno – moralne, w jakich żyli mieszkańcy Wilna i Wileńszczyzny w pierwszym czterdziestoleciu XX wieku. Zapoznanie się z tymi faktami jest niezbędne dla osadzenia w kontekście historycznym słów Chrystusa zapisanych przez siostrę Faustynę w „Dzienniczku”, a co za tym idzie, pomocne przy analizie i interpretacji obietnic Zbawiciela przez nią w nim zapisanych i przy trafnym określeniu opisanych zdarzeń, szczególnie w czasach wileńskich. Kolejny etap rozprawy dotyczy odtworzenia początków pierwszej wspólnoty, zwanej Wileńską Szóstką, która została powołana do życia przez ks. Michała Sopoćkę. Przybliżono w nim, w najważniejszych punktach, całą jej historię, aż po dzień dzisiejszy, oraz podkreślono pojawienie się znaków świadczących o spełniającym się zapewnieniu Chrystusa o powstaniu nowego zgromadzenia zakonnego, które będzie głosiło w świecie Miłosierdzie Boga. Analiza wydarzeń pozwoliła na jednoznaczne ustalenie Założyciela wspólnoty i doprowadziła do pochylenia się nad ofiarowanym jej charyzmatem. Natura tegoż charyzmatu zostanie odsłonięta w kolejnym, trzecim rozdziale rozprawy. W nim wpierw został ukazany osobisty charyzmat dany Założycielowi, a następnie omówiona ta jego część, którą otrzymała wspólnota w momencie powstawania. Zaakcentowany został także rdzeń tego charyzmatu, który tworzy Miłosierdzie Boże.W następnym etapie refleksji zaprezentowano sposoby realizacji tegoż charyzmatu, przyjętego przez Instytut, a odwzorowywanego w życiu jego członkiń. Dotyczą one zarówno przyjętych uregulowań prawnych, sposobu życia, jak i podejmowanych przez nie działań. Ostatnim zagadnieniem podjętym w rozprawie jest refleksja nad aktualnością charyzmatu, jakim żyją członkinie tej wspólnoty. Owa aktualność została uwydatniona w trzech wymiarach: wertykalnym, horyzontalnym i społecznym.Do rozprawy dołączony został aneks, który zawiera rozbudowany życiorys Ludmiły Roszko, wieloletniej Prezeski omawianej wspólnoty, która nieformalnie nazywana jest w niej duszą Instytutu, oraz fotokopie wybranych dokumentów, przechowywanych w Archiwum Instytutu Miłosierdzia Bożego.
The Institute of Divine Mercy is a secular community of Consecrated Life, which roots go back to the visions of Sister Faustina Kowalska and activities of the Vilnius confessor - Fr. Michael Sopocko. The purpose of this hearing was to present the charism which the Institute follows.Sources of this dissertation are the documents, which are almost entirely unknown outside this community and have been collected over the years by its long-standing president Ludmila Roszko and are currently held by one of the members. Previously unreleased materials were used as well as those which were located in the Archives of the Congregation of Sisters of Merciful Jesus in Gorzow Wielkopolski (manuscript of the "Diary" by Isabella Naborowska, one of the first community member creating a new religious congregation which was supposed to preach God's mercy called the Vilnius Six which became a founding member of the Assembly) and the Archives of the Sisters of the Angels in Konstancin - Jeziorna (manuscript of the "Diary" by Sister Helena Majewska which - by the will of her confessor, Fr. Sopocko M. - took care of the Vilnius Six at the time when he was hiding in Czarny Bór), and partially known studies by Fr. dr. Henryk Ciereszko, his biography and the documents stored in the Archives of the Archdiocese of Bialystok and the Archdiocesan Curia Archive in Bialystok.The choice of sources and issues determined the research method. The method of analytic - synthetic presentation of the process involving the formation, development of the community, isolation and characterization of its charism as well as the historical method of explaining the context of organization and development of this Institute.The structure of the thesis consists of five chapters. At first historical, social, political, religious and moral aspects are determined which residents of Vilnius region lived in in the first four decades of the twentieth century. Understanding these facts is necessary to settle the historical context of Christ's words recorded by Sister Faustina in the "Diary", and hence, helpful in analyzing and interpreting the promises of the Savior accurately and determinate of these events, especially in this time in Vilnius.The next stage of the hearing relates to the beginnings of the first community, called the Vilnius Six, which was founded by Fr. Michael Sopocko. The most important points of its history until the present day are stressed as well as the emergence of signs of the Christ’s ensurance of the creation of a new religious congregation, which will proclaim God's mercy in the world. The Analysis of events allowed the unequivocal determination of the founder of the community and led to reaching down to charism donated to it.The Nature of that charism will be unveiled in the third chapter of the dissertation. At first the personal charism of the Founder was shown, and then the part was discussed when the charism was received by the community at the time of its formation. The core of this charisma which makes God's mercy was emphasized. In the next stage of the reflection it is presented how to implement the same charism, adopted by the Institute, and reproduced by its members in their lives. They concern both the adopted legislation, the way of life as well as actions taken by them.The last issue in the dissertation is the reflection on the timeliness of the charism which the members of this community follow. That timeliness was highlighted in three dimensions: vertical, horizontal and social.An annex is also enclosed to the dissertation, which includes an extensive biography of Ludmila Roszko, long-standing director of this community who is informally known as the soul of the Institute, and photocopies of selected documents stored in in the Archives of the Institute of Divine Mercy.
