Phraseologisms in poetry translation: the Spanish translations of the poems of Wisława Szymborska
Abstract
Dysertacja składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy dotyczy frazeologizmów w tekście poetyckim. Na tle obecnego stanu badań przedstawione jest pojęcie śladu frazeologicznego, stanowiące propozycję kognitywistycznego spojrzenia na omawiane zagadnienie. Rozdział drugi poświęcony jest refleksji nad miejscem frazeologizmów w poezji Wisławy Szymborskiej. Wyróżniono trzy cechy twórczości Poetki, w których przekształcenia frazeologiczne przejawiają swój potencjał sensotwórczy; są to: aporetyczność, apokryficzność i ahierarchiczność. Rozdział trzeci porusza zagadnienia ekwiwalencji systemowej frazeologizmów, w oparciu o teorię konwencjonalnego języka figuratywnego (Dobrovol’skij and Piirainen 2005), a także ekwiwalencji tekstowej jednostek frazeologicznych, rozpatrywanej w kontekście poetyki i translatologii nurtu kognitywistycznego. Ostatni, czwarty, rozdział przedstawia analizy przypadków, przyporządkowane do proponowanych kategorii ekwiwalencji śladu frazeologicznego. Przykłady pochodzą z wierszy Wisławy Szymborskiej oraz ich tłumaczeń na język hiszpański. Zestawienie tekstu oryginalnego z jego tłumaczeniami ma na celu wskazanie różnic w konceptualizacji oraz określenie źródła owych różnic.
The dissertation consists of four chapters. The first deals with phraseologisms in the poetic text. State-of-the-art research serves as a backdrop for the introduction of the concept of the phraseological trace, which constitutes an attempt at a cognitivist treatment of the issue. The second chapter considers the place of phraseologisms in Wisława Szymborska’s poetry. The Poet’s work was identified as aporetic, apocryphal and ahierarchical – three characteristics in which phraseological modifications manifest their meaning-making potential. The third chapter covers the systemic equivalence of phraseologisms according to the Conventional Figurative Language Theory (Dobrovol’skij and Piirainen 2005), as well as the their textual equivalence considered within the framework of Cognitive Poetics and Cognitive Translation Studies. The fourth and last chapter presents a number of case-studies, assigned to the categories which have been suggested earlier for the analysis of the equivalence of the phraseological trace. The examples are taken from the poems of Wisława Szymborska and their Spanish translations. The aim of the juxtaposition of the original text and its translations is to pinpoint the differences in conceptualization and determine their sources.
