Abstract

Praca podejmuje próbę analizy społeczno - politycznych postaw i idei XIX wiecznej Walii, skupiając się na aspekcie narodowościowym. Badaniami obejmuje kwestie takie jak: uczestnictwo Walijczyków w życiu politycznym, akty obywatelskiego nieposłuszeństwa, kwestię językową oraz wyznaniową, stosunek do przeszłości i do własnej kultury oraz do Anglii i samych Anglików. Patriotyzm Walijczyków opisany został z perspektywy trzech następujących po sobie chronologicznie nurtów. Pierwszy stanowią niepokoje społeczne pierwszej połowy XIX stulecia, z których największymi były Merthyr i Newport Rising oraz Rebecca Riots. Nurt drugi wiąże się z lojalizmem i wzrostem religijności oraz niezwykle ważną dla Walii kampanią na rzecz disestablishmentu. Częścią tej fazy jest również tzw. „samomodernizacja”, oznaczająca ulepszanie kraju od wewnątrz (kultura, edukacja). Nurt trzeci natomiast to przede wszystkim idea jedności narodowej oraz dążność do politycznej autonomii w ramach Zjednoczonego Królestwa. Oprócz aspektów politycznych praca bierze również pod uwagę szeroki kontekst językowy oraz kulturowy ( rola literatury pięknej i Eisteddfod w społeczeństwie walijskim) oraz podejmuje próbę komparatystyki postaw patriotycznych innych narodów funkcjonujących w XIX wieku bez własnego państwa, (Irlandczycy, Czesi, Polacy). Wykorzystane źródła historyczne oraz literackie składają się z tekstów w języku walijskim oraz angielskim.

The thesis attempts to analyze the socio - political outlooks and ideologies of the Welsh in the nineteenth century, focusing on the aspect of national identity. The study covers issues such as participation of the Welsh in political life, acts of civil disobedience, attitudes towards religion and the native language as well as attitudes towards England and the English. The patriotism of the Welsh is described from the perspective of three trends that follow the chronological order. The first is the phase of social unrest of the first half of the nineteenth century. The largest disturbances were the Merthyr and the Newport Risings and the Rebecca Riots. The second trend is associated with loyalism and increase in religiosity and the campaign for disestablishment, which was one of the most important issues in Welsh politics. Part of this phase was also the so called "samomodernizacja", the movement for improving the country from the inside (culture, education). The third trend is mainly the idea of national unity and the desire for political autonomy within the United Kingdom. In addition to the political aspects, the thesis also takes into account the broader context of language and culture (for example the role of literature and the Eisteddfod in the Welsh society). It as well attempts to make comparisons with other nations, which, in the nineteenth century, functioned without a state (the Irish, the Czech, the Poles). Historical and literary sources used in the thesis consist of Welsh and English language material.
