Human needs and values in political discourse (on the basis of inaugural addresses of American presidents after the Second World War)
Abstract
Głównym celem niniejszej rozprawy doktorskiej jest przedstawienie nowego podejścia do analizy ludzkich potrzeb i wartości w dyskursie politycznym, w szczególności uwzględniającego aspekty bliskiego i szerokiego kontekstu i jego wpływu na polityczne teksty. Jako materiał badawczy wybrano przemówienia inauguracyjne prezydentów amerykańskich wygłoszone po drugiej wojnie światowej. Ponieważ stanowią one część niemal niezmiennej ceremonii, podobnej do rytuału, są odpowiednie do dogłębnej analizy współzależności między tekstem i kontekstem.
W części teoretycznej pracy, po przedstawieniu różnych metod badania dyskursu, wybieramy narzędzia Krytycznej Analizy Dyskursu, która oparta jest na nowym rozumieniu pojęcia władzy i ideologii. Następnie zostaje zdefiniowana polityka, a mowy inauguracyjne prezydentów zostają uznane jako odrębny gatunek dyskursu politycznego. W kolejnym rozdziale przedstawione zostają ludzkie potrzeby z perspektywy psychologii oraz socjologii oraz typologie ludzkich wartości stworzone w obrębie psychologii i filozofii. Po wybraniu klasyfikacji wartości zaproponowanej przez Puzyninę (1992), przedstawiamy językowe wykładniki ideologii a także wpływ kontekstu na ideologię. Analiza korpusu poprzedzona jest prezentacją źródeł wartości amerykańskich, co pozwala nam na dostosowanie typologii Puzyniny do celów naszej analizy. Zakładamy, że prezydenci zwykle wymieniają podstawowe ludzkie potrzeby oraz wyższe wartości; zestawienie (także numeryczne) tych odniesień z informacją o bliskim i szerokim kontekście pozwala nam lepiej zrozumieć treść przemówień inauguracyjnych oraz charakter procesów politycznych.
The main goal of this dissertation is to propose a new method of analyzing human needs and values in political discourse, which would allow us to take into account aspects of the immediate and broad context and its influence on political texts. Presidential inaugural speeches delivered after the Second World War were chosen as the material for this research. As they constitute a part of a highly structured ceremony, similar to a ritual, they are suitable for an in-depth study of interdependence of text and context. In the theoretical part of this paper, after presenting various approaches to the study of discourse, we select the tools of Critical Discourse Analysis, which is based on a novel conception of power and ideology. We then go on to define politics and set presidential inaugurals apart from other genres of political discourse. In the next chapter, psychological and sociological perspectives on human needs as well as typologies of values created within the fields of psychology and philosophy are presented. Having selected Puzynina’s (1992) division of values as the basis of our own classification, we concentrate on linguistic exponents of ideology, and the ideological impact of context. Our corpus analysis is preceded by a discussion of sources of American values and the description of the inauguration ceremony. This helps us to adjust Puzynina’s typology for the purpose of our analysis. We assume that in general, presidents talk about universal needs, as well as high-level values, and set these references (numerically too) against the features of the immediate and broad context, which helps us understand the content of the speeches as well as the nature of the political process.
