Historia narodowa jako element wsparcia republikanizmu francuskiego w XIX wieku (J. Michelet, E. Quinet, E. Lavisse)

Abstract

Głównym celem pracy jest wykazanie roli, jaką w kształtowaniu republikanizmu francuskiego w XIX wieku odegrała historia narodowa. Na podstawie analizy twórczości i działalności trzech wybitnych francuskich historyków: Julesa Micheleta, Edgara Quineta i Ernesta Lavisse'a udowodniono, że historia może być elementem wspierającym reżim polityczny, w tym przypadku republikanizm. Historycy, którzy tworzyli na przestrzeni całego dziewiętnastego wieku, w swoich dziełach utrwalili podstawowe założenia przyświecające francuskiej myśli republikańskiej, takie jak: suwerenność ludu, sekularyzacja państwa, cnoty obywatelskie, idea zaangażowania obywatelskiego, czy państwa wszystkich obywateli. Popularność, jaką cieszyły się ich książki, a także ich zaangażowanie w kwestie edukacji ludu oraz wysokie stanowiska, które zajmowali na renomowanych uczelniach, uczyniły z nich nauczycieli narodu. We Francji wiek XIX nazywany jest wiekiem historyków. Bowiem to historycy w największym stopniu kształtowali świat polityki, zajmowali najważniejsze pozycje w państwie i cieszyli sie ogromnym autorytetem wśród społeczeństwa. Po wybuchu Wielkiej Rewolucji i ostatecznym upadku ancien régime'u pojawiła się potrzeba spisania nowej historii, takiej, która zamiast opisywać dzieje wielkich monarchii, przedstawiłaby prawdziwe życie francuskiego społeczeństwa. Lud potrzebował własnej historii. Michelet, Quinet i Lavisse doskonale wypełnili tę lukę, dając Francji monumentalne dzieła historyczne i utrwalając francuski ideał republikański w narodzie.

PhD thesis demonstrates the impact that national history has had on the development of French republicanism. Based on the analysis of the work and activities of the three prominent French historians: Jules Michelet, Edgar Quinet and Ernest Lavisse it has been proved that history can be a support for the political system, in reference to republicanism. Those historians, who were creating throughout the entire nineteenth century, had consolidated in their works the basic assumptions of the French republican ideal as: the sovereignty of the people, the secularization of the state, civic virtues, the idea of civic engagement or the state of all the citizens. The popularity of their books, their commitment to the education of the people and the high positions they held at prestigious universities, have made them the teachers of the nation. In France, the nineteenth century is called the age of historians. Historians have shaped the world of politics, occupied important positions in the country and enjoyed great authority among the population. After the outbreak of the French Revolution and the ultimate collapse of the ancien regime there was a need to write down a new story, one that instead of describing the history of the great monarchies, would present the real life of French society. The people needed their own history. Michelet, Quinet and Lavisse perfectly filled the gap, giving France a monumental historical works and perpetuating the French republican ideal among the nation.
