Infrastructure of Networked Media in Artistic Practices (Based on the Analysis of Selected Cases)
Abstract
Niniejsza rozprawa doktorska poświęcona jest infrastrukturom medialnym oraz ich kulturowemu wymiarowi, który jest obecny komunikowany poprzez praktyki artystyczne po tzw. zwrocie infrastrukturalnym. Rozumiejąc praktyki artystyczne jako praktyki o charakterze badawczym, używam przywołanych praktyk jako narzędzia, dzięki którym przyglądam się kulturowemu wymiarowi infrastruktur medialnych. Opisanemu procesowi towarzyszy także niezbędna metarefleksja, analiza samych praktyk artystycznych, w tym sojuszy i taktyk podejmowanych przez twórców. Praca składa się z dwóch głównych części. W części pierwszej nakreślam kontekst dla relacji pomiędzy zjawiskami technologicznymi (w tym infrastruktur medialnych), kulturowymi (w tym praktyk artystycznych) i społecznych oraz tematyzuję infrastruktury oraz infrastruktury medialne jako przedmiot badań. Część druga ma charakter analityczny oraz interpretacyjny, w której wybrane przypadki praktyk artystycznych traktowane są jako castellsowskie węzły – miejsca przepływów zarówno zjawisk o charakterze materialnym jak i dyskursywnym czy relacyjnym. Omawiane przypadki szereguje w następujące po sobie kategorie: 1) wizualności – w ramach której analizuję potencjał i rolę widoczności infrastruktur medialnych, a także taktyki i sposoby konstruowania tejże; 2) kartografii – traktując mapę jako: mapę wytwarzającą przestrzeń konstruowaną przez infrastrukturę medialną oraz mapę wytwarzającą i porządkującą wiedzę na temat przestrzeni, w którą są wpisane i osadzone infrastruktury medialne – będące także narzędziem jej poznania; 3) relacji – w ramach której zbadałam infrastrukturalne relacje (szczególnie emocjonalne i afektywne) tematyzowane przez praktyki artystyczne; 4) kontrinfrastruktur – gdzie przyjrzałam się propozycjom krytycznym włączającym użytkownika oraz jego sprawczość.
This doctoral dissertation is dedicated to media infrastructures and their cultural dimension, which is communicated through artistic practices after the so-called infrastructural turn. Understanding artistic practices as research-based activities, I employ these practices as tools to examine the cultural dimension of media infrastructures. This process is accompanied by essential self-reflection, an analysis of the artistic practices themselves, including the alliances and tactics employed by creators. The work consists of two main parts. In the first part, I outline the context for the relationship between technological phenomena (including media infrastructures), cultural aspects (including artistic practices), and societal aspects. I also address infrastructures and media infrastructures as subjects of research. The second part is analytical and interpretative, where selected cases of artistic practices are treated as Castellsian nodes – places of flows of both material and discursive phenomena and relational aspects. The discussed cases are categorized as follows: 1) Visibility – within this category, I analyze the potential and role of the visibility of media infrastructures, as well as tactics and methods of constructing it. 2) Cartography – considering maps as tools that generate space constructed by media infrastructure and maps that produce and organize knowledge about the space in which media infrastructures are embedded. 3) Relations – within this category, I examined infrastructural relations (especially emotional and affective ones) thematized by artistic practices. 4) Counter-infrastructures – where I explored critical proposals that involve users and their agency.
