Social Competencies of Students of Technical and Social Studies

Abstract

Dynamic changes on the contemporary job market mean that higher education institutions graduates need to meet high requirements. Employers highly appreciate not only the so-called hard competencies, namely professional skills required in a given profession, but also social competencies necessary for effective teamwork. The studies conducted so far have revealed that higher education institutions graduates lack social competencies and that therefore there is a need to examine the level of competencies among graduates of technical and social faculties. This analysis will offer not only cognitive qualities, but also practical guidelines for university education planners. The study has been conducted among graduates of different faculties at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. The research made use of the Social Competence Questionnaire prepared by A. Matczak. The questionnaire allowed the author of the study to establish three areas of university students’ competences: situations of social exposure, situations requiring assertiveness and situations of close interpersonal contact. The research findings have revealed low and very low competencies of graduates, including both general competencies and competencies in respective scales. There are no significant differences in the assessment of these competencies among the graduates of technical and social studies.
