“The Appenzeller Family Saga”: History, Self-Identification and Self-Creation
Abstract
Praca ta jest studium dziejów wybranej grupy osób powiązanych ze sobą różnymi rodzinnymi więzami. Dziejów faktycznych, rekonstruowanych metodami nauk pomocniczych historii, ale przynajmniej w tym samym stopniu również dziejów doświadczanych w czasie przez jednostki i utrwalanych w twórczy sposób, a także opowiadanych, konstruowanych i rozpowszechnianych w kręgu rodziny, znajomych i nieznajomych – na zewnątrz. Tytułowa „saga rodu” jest narracją stworzoną głównie przez ostatniego z Appenzellerów, Stanisława, malarza i agenta polskiego wywiadu. Przekształca on historię swoich przodków tak, by uzasadniała przyjętą przez niego – z pozycji urodzonego na francuskiej Riwierze, w bogatej kosmopolitycznej rodzinie beniaminka – identyfikację z nowopowstającym państwem polskim i jego zaangażowanie na rzecz Polski właśnie. Jednocześnie na dużo obszerniejszą „rodzinną sagę”, której alternatywne zręby tworzy niniejsza praca, składa się wiele innych źródeł. Oprócz fragmentów opowieści bohatera i ich konfrontacji z faktami historycznymi są to m.in. wspomnienia jego matki, Inéz Wolff, genealogia jej rodziny oraz listy wymieniane między współczesnymi sobie postaciami tej narracji i ich znajomymi, zapiski i dokumenty żony Stanisława, Anny Appenzeller, oraz plastyczna twórczość jego samego, przede wszystkim autoportrety.
This doctoral dissertation investigates the history of a group of people related to one another by different family ties. It comprises actual facts reconstructed with the methods of auxiliary historical sciences along with creatively-recorded individual experiences of that period and stories that were recounted, constructed and spread both within the circles of family and acquaintances, as well as outside among strangers. The title "family saga" is a narrative predominantly created by the last of the Appenzellers, Stanisław, who was a painter and Polish intelligence agent. Adopting the perspective of a favourite child born into a rich cosmopolitan family in the French Riviera, he transforms the history of his ancestors such that it rationalizes his identification with the newly established Polish state and his commitment to Polish affairs. At the same time, one can speak here of a much more extensive "family saga" comprised of numerous other sources, an alternative framework of which is established by the present dissertation. Apart from the excerpts of the protagonist's story confronted with historical facts, these sources include the memoirs of his mother, Inez Wolff, and her family’s genealogy, letters exchanged by the characters of this story and their acquaintances, notes and documents of Stanisław’s wife, Anna Appenzeller, as well as his own artistic work, predominantly his self-portraits.
