Norwid’s Ancient Rome
Abstract
Celem pracy jest interpretacja złożonego,
ambiwalentnego stosunku Cypriana Norwida do
antycznej Romanitas oraz ujawnienie bogatej
gamy jego nawiązań do starorzymskiej
rzeczywistości. Dotąd nie powstała monografia
poświęcona wątkom rzymskim w twórczości
Norwida. W początkowych partiach niniejszej
rozprawy prezentuję wielość znaczeń Rzymu dla
autora Quidama i przybliżam problematykę jego
pobytów w Wiecznym Mieście. Celem
wprowadzenia zarysowuję także
dziewiętnastowieczne znaczenie Italii oraz
starożytnych Grecji i Rzymu. W kolejnym rozdziale
opisuję stosunek Norwida do historii antycznej
Romy i kształtujących ją postaci historycznych.Poruszam m.in. takie zagadnienia, jak relacja
między starożytnym Rzymem a problematyką
państwa i narodu, przełom dziejów i relacja między
kategoriami Roma pagana – Roma Christiana, w
kontekście której oddzielnie analizuję poemat
Quidam. Trzecia część rozprawy poświęcona jest
refleksjom Norwida na temat literatury i sztuki
rzymskiej (w tym problematyki ruin). Wśród wątków
literackich, obok kwestii genezy i charakteru
literatury starożytnych Rzymian, omawiam
odniesienia do starorzymskiego ,,świata
literackiego”, który był dla Norwida istotną metaforą
jego własnych zmagań z wydawcami, krytykami i
czytelnikami. W ostatnim, najbardziej filologicznym
rozdziale pracy badam wpływ, jaki na poetycką
twórczość Norwida wywarła jego ,,rzymska
wyobraźnia” oraz analizuję przekłady z łacińskich
poetów, tj. Horacego i Owidiusza. Ukazuję też
mechanizmy kształtowania się swoistej ,,rzymskiej
tożsamości” Norwida, ujawniającej się m.in. w jego
listach.
The issue of the dissertation is to present the complex, ambivalent Norwid’s relation with the ancient Romanitas and the wide range of his references to the Roman antiquity. Hitherto there have not been any monographs on this subject. The first parts of the dissertation investigate the different meanings that Rome presented to Norwid and the poet’s visits to the Eternal City. As the introduction there is also an analysis of the significance of Italy and also Greek and Roman antiquity in the 19th century. The next chapter is focused on the Norwid’s relation with the history of the ancient Rome and its representatives. Within the scope of this topic the following issues are specifically examined: problem of state and nation in the ancient Rome, the turn of the eras and relation between Roma pagana and Roma Christiana, inter alia in the poem Quidam. The third chapter investigates Norwid’s view of the literature and art of the ancient Rome (also its ruins). Among the literary questions, aside from origins and character of the Roman literature, it analyses the references to the Roman “literary world” repeatedly used by Norwid to write about his own struggles with publishers, critics and readers. The last and the most philological chapter examines how the “Roman imagination” of Norwid influenced his poetry. There is also analysis of Norwid’s translations of the poems by Horace and Ovid. Furthermore, there is also presented the mechanism of the specific “Roman identity” that appears ,among others, in the correspondences by Norwid.
