Shame in the life of Poles: ways of understanding and experiencing, roles and forms of presence
Abstract
Rozprawa jest próbą uzupełnienia naukowego namysłu nad społecznym zagadnieniem wstydu oraz jego analizą z socjologicznej perspektywy. Szczegółowe cele pracy są zarówno teoretyczne jak i badawcze. Te pierwsze odnoszą się do odtworzenia wybranych ujęć wstydu w naukach społecznych oraz zaprezentowania jak rozwijało się zainteresowanie nim wśród ich przedstawicieli. Cele badawcze natomiast zostały podporządkowane chęci dowiedzenia się czegoś więcej na temat wstydu zakorzenionego w polskim kontekście społeczno-kulturowym: potocznego myślenia o nim, powodów i specyfiki jego odczuwania, a także form jego obecności zarówno w osobistych doświadczeniach Polaków, jak i w zapośredniczonych przez media komunikatach. Podobnie jak cele, także struktura pracy (wyłączając wstęp, zakończenie i aneksy) została podzielona na dwie główne części: teoretyczną i badawczą. Pierwsza z nich zawiera trzy rozdziały poświęcone odpowiednio opisowi kształtowania zainteresowania wstydem; definicjom i głównym ujęciom tej emocji w dziedzinach filozofii, psychologii oraz socjologii oraz jej etymologiczny i semantyczny opis; funkcjom wstydu oddziałującym na jednostkę i społeczeństwo. W drugiej części pracy znajdują się: opis obranej metodologii, przegląd wybranych polskich badań poświęconych wstydowi, a także prezentacja wyników badań własnych realizowanych za pomocą sondażu oraz analizy zawartości prasy.
The dissertation is an attempt to supplement the scientific reflection on the social issue of shame and its analysis from a sociological perspective. The specific objectives of the dissertation are both theoretical and empirical. The former refer to the reconstruction of selected approaches to shame in social sciences and to presenting how interest in it developed among their representatives. On the other hand, the research goals were subordinated to the desire to learn more about shame rooted in the Polish socio-cultural context: common thinking about it, the reasons for and specificity of experiencing it, as well as the forms of its presence both in the personal experiences of Poles and in media-mediated messages. Like the goals, the structure of the work (excluding admission, conclusion and annexes) was divided into two main parts: theoretical and empirical. The first one contains three chapters devoted respectively to the description of the development of interest in shame; definitions and main approaches to the emotion in the fields of philosophy, psychology and sociology, and its etymological and semantic description; shame functions affecting the individual and society. The second part of the work includes: a description of the methodology chosen, a review of selected Polish research projects on shame, as well as the presentation of the results of own research carried out by means of a survey and press content analysis.
