The Conception of Conscience of John Henry Newman and Joseph Butler. Comparative Study
Abstract
Praca składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej zostało omówione życie Johna Henry’ego Newmana w kontek-ście jego posłuszeństwa wobec przełożonych anglikańskich i katolickich oraz droga wzrostu duchowego, wynikająca z jednoczesnego wsłuchania w głos sumienia. Następnie została przedstawiona koncepcja sumienia Kardynała, wzbogacona o schematy, a także implikacje związane z Newmanowską synejdezjologią. Część druga dotyczy życia Josepha Butlera, które zostało omówione pod kątem jego intelektualnego rozwoju, pozycji w anglikanizmie i stosunku do Kościoła katolickiego. Kolejno zaprezentowana jest jego koncepcja sumienia w formie opisowej i za pomocą schematu oraz implikacje jego studium nad sumieniem. W części trzeciej zawarte jest podsumowanie wraz z aneksem w postaci tabel, które uwzględniają aparat pojęciowy związany z sumieniem u obu autorów, a dodatkowo występujący w Summie teologii św. Tomasza z Akwinu dla wskazania ewentualnego źródła inspiracji dla myśli Newmana i Butlera.
The work consists of three parts. The first discusses the life of John Henry Newman in the context of his obe-dience to Anglican and Catholic superiors, and the path of spiritual growth resulting from simultaneous listening to the voice in conscience. Then the concept of the Cardinal's conscience was presented, enriched with diagrams and the implications associated with Newman study of conscience. The second part concerns the life of Joseph Butler, which was discussed for his intellec-tual development, position in Anglicanism and in rela-tion to the Catholic Church. Then his concept of con-science is described in a descriptive and schematic form and the implications of his study of conscience. The third part contains a summary together with an annex in the form of tables, which take into account the concep-tual apparatus related to the conscience of both authors, and additionally appearing in The Summa of Theology of St. Thomas Aquinas to indicate a possible source of ins-piration for the Newman’s and Butler’s thought.
