| dc.description.abstract | V-wieczne Historie Kościoła Sokratesa Scholastyka i Sozomenosa Hermiasza – to obszerne dzieła o charakterze perswazyjnym, przedstawiające wizję dziejów cesarstwa od Konstantyna po Teodozjusza II przez pryzmat dziejów chrześcijaństwa. Jako takie wymagały starannego planowania, zbierania i opracowania materiałów. Analiza zamieszczonych w nich dygresji, także z perspektywy teorii retorycznej, daje wgląd w warsztat pracy dawnych historyków oraz ich podejście do historii, pozwala ponadto prześledzić, w jaki sposób dygresje włączane są do opowieści i jak funkcjonują w ogólnej strukturze dzieła. Praca skupia się na sposobie, w jaki historycy Kościoła odchodzili od głównego tematu, na tym, jakich narzędzi używali do włączania dygresji do narracji oraz opisuje poszczególne kategorie dygresji i przedstawiane w nich treści. Te elementy strukturalne Historii Kościoła dostarczają cennych informacji o sympatiach, antypatiach i motywacjach historyków. Z ich analizy wynika, że historycy Kościoła musieli dokonywać świadomych wyborów dotyczących tego, co włączyć do swoich narracji, a wybór ten dyktowały indywidualne zapatrywania autorów. The fifth-century Ecclesiastical Histories of Socrates Scholasticus and Sozomenos Hermias are comprehensive works of persuasive character, presenting a vision of the history of the empire from Constantine to Theodosius II through the prism of history of christianity. As such, they required careful planning, collection and examination of materials. The analysis of the digressions included, also from the perspective of rhetorical theory, provides an insight into the workshop of the early historians and their approach to history, and allows us to trace how digressions are incorporated into the story and how they function in the overall structure of the work. The dissertation focuses on the way in which Church historians departed from the main theme, what tools they used to incorporate digressions into the narrative, and describes the different categories of digressions and the content presented in them. These structural elements of Ecclesiastical Histories provide valuable information about the sympathies, antipathies and motivations of historians. Their analysis shows that Church historians had to make conscious choices about what to include in their narratives, and that these choices were dictated by the individual views of the authors. | |
