An investigation into the impact of a study abroad programme on tertiary education students' intercultural communicative competence
Abstract
Centralnym zagadnieniem dysertacji jest interkulturowa kompetencja komunikacyjna (IKK), a konkretnie jej rozwój w wyniku uczestnictwa w programie wymiany studenckiej. W rozprawie czytelnik znajdzie informacje odnoszące się do wpływu programów wymiany studenckiej (na przykładzie programu Erazmus) na rozwój interkulturowej kompetencji komunikacyjnej tychże studentów. Historyczny rys rozwoju terminu "kompetencja" w językoznawstwie stosowanym, jego ewolucja w kierunku kompetencji komunikacyjnej i późniejszy rozwój w interkulturową kompetencję komunikacyjną poprzedza dyskusję na temat interkulturowości w nauczaniu języków obcych oraz przegląd badań nad kompetencją interkulturową. Drugą, empiryczną część pracy stanowi badanie własne autora.
Badaniem objęto studentów z różnych części Polski, u których poziom IKK został zbadany przed wyjazdem za granicę (wszyscy uczestnicy brali udział w programie Erazmus) oraz po ich powrocie z wymiany. Autor badania docieka, w jaki sposób to doświadczenie wpłynęło na poszczególne komponenty IKK oraz w jaki sposób nauczanie języków obcych w duchu interkulturowości może wspomagać studentów w ich przyszłych wyjazdach.
The overall aim of the dissertation is to explore the impact of study abroad programmes on tertiary students' intercultural communicative competence. The reader will find information relevant to the encompassing theme of the influence of studying abroad on the example of the Erasmus programme on students' ICC. A historical overview of the concept of competence in applied linguistics, its expansion into communicative competence, and later, its development into intercultural communicative competence is followed by a discussion on the intercultural approach in foreign language teaching, and the author's outline of research conducted on the topic in recent decades. All the facts presented are followed by the present author's remarks and tentative suggestions as to which issues still need to be addressed. The second part of the dissertation reports on the author's own research, which involved students from different parts of Poland. The level of their ICC was measured before and after their sojourn. The research delves into the development of particular ICC components and aims to explicate how FL teaching can help students in their future sojourns.
