Polish religious and metaphysical poetry of the 20th and 21st century which ‘saves the disorder of things’
Abstract
Celem dysertacji jest rozróżnienie i opisanie dwóch fenomenów poezji: religijnej i metafizycznej. W związku z tym, iż oba pojęcia nie są w polskim literaturoznawstwie szczegółowo opisane, często używane są wymiennie i nie stanowią terminów naukowych, dokonuje ich teoretycznego rozróżnienia i proponuję własną typologię. Założeniem rozprawy jest teza, iż poezja religijna i metafizyczna stanowią dwa odmienne rodzaje poezji, chociaż pierwsza stanowi pewien wariant drugiej. Wyróżnikiem pierwszej jest podmiot utożsamiany z homo religiosus, tzn. pozostający w relacji z Sacrum. Poezję religijna nie wyczerpuje się wyłącznie w wariancie wyznaniowym, mieści w sobie zjawiska związane z profanacją, desakralizacją, buntem, niepewnością czy zwątpieniem. Ważnym kryterium jest kryterium osobowego Boga, które nie pojawia się w poezji metafizycznej. Ten rodzaj poezji stanowi swoistą odpowiedź na odwieczne datum questionis – zarówno w wariancie filozoficznym: czym jest byt, jaka jest podstawa świata, jak i egzystencjalnym: kim jestem, dokąd zmierzam. Analizując zjawiska sakralizacji i desakralizacji w poezji współczesnej, opisując figury Boga w niej występujące (szczególnie Ojca i Pana) oraz charakteryzując współczesne warianty metafizyczności, kreślę tło dla zrozumienia przemian dotyczących zarówno religijności jak i metafizyki, zarówno w kontekście postsekularyzmu jak i kryzysu metafizyki.
The aim of this dissertation is to distinguish and describe two types of poetry, namely, the religious and the metaphysical one. Due to the fact that both terms are not described in much detail in Polish literary studies, they are frequently used interchangeably. Therefore, this thesis embarks on distinguishing them on theoretical grounds and provides its own typology. Even though religious poetry is a variant of metaphysical poetry, this dissertation assumes that they constitute two different kinds of poetry. What is characteristic of religious poetry is the subject identified with homo religiosus i.e. the subject maintaining the relation with Sacrum. Not only is religious poetry characterized by the religious aspect, but also by profanation, desacralization, rebellion, uncertainty and doubt. The criterion of personal God is an important feature which distinguishes religious poetry from metaphysical one. This kind of poetry constitutes an answer to the eternal datum questionis – both in the philosophical sense: what being and the foundation of the world is about, and in the existential one: who I am, where I am going. By analyzing sacralization and desacralization in contemporary poetry, describing figures of God (especially the figure of the Father and of the Lord) and characterizing contemporary variants of metaphysics, this thesis provides the background for understanding religious and metaphysical changes both in the context of postsecularization and the crisis of metaphysics.
