The "Ukrainian" national minority in the Romanian Maramures and problems with their identity
Abstract
Rozprawa dotyczy zagadnienia tożsamości etnicznej ukraińskiej mniejszości narodowej z rumuńskiego Maramureszu rozpatrywanej na różnych poziomach identyfikacji. W pracy podejmuję dyskusję z obowiązującymi poglądami proponując odmienną interpretację i analizę prezentowanego zjawiska. Przyczyną rozważań omawianego zagadnienia jest tocząca się dyskusja między środowiskiem naukowców ukraińskich i związanych z ruchem Rusinów Karpackich na temat tożsamości etnicznej mieszkańców kilkunastu miejscowości leżących na pograniczu rumuńsko-ukraińskim w Maramureszu. Podejmując się analizy naukowych dyskusji, oficjalnych elitarnych narracji i działań oraz z perspektywy życia codziennego "zwykłych" mieszkańców wykazuję, że kwestia tożsamości etnicznej badanej społeczności jest kwestią daleko bardziej złożoną niż pokazuje to literatura przedmiotu i oficjalne dyskursy obu środowisk etnicznych. W pracy pokazuję, że badane społeczności w dalszym ciągu pozostają obiektem ideologicznych zabiegów próbujących z nich uczynić Ukraińców bądź Rusinów Karpackich. Nieustannie jednak są to procesy niezakończone, a tożsamość "zwykłych" ludzi kształtowana jest głównie przez zanurzenie w lokalnych relacjach i sposobach organizacji społecznej.
The subject of the dissertation are the issues of ethnic identity of the Ukrainian national minority from the Romanian Maramures, considered at different levels of identification. The work discusses the current views and proposes a different interpretation and analysis of the presented phenomenon. The cause of consideration of the issue in question is the ongoing discussion between the society of the Ukrainian academics and those related to the movement of the Carpatho - Rusyns on the ethnic identity of the inhabitants of several locations on the Romanian-Ukrainian border in Maramures. By analyzing the academic discussion, official elite narrations and activities and on the basis of the perspective of the everyday life of the “typical” inhabitants, I prove that the issue of ethnic identity of the analyzed community is far more complex than the literature and the official discourses of both ethnic societies show. The work shows that the analyzed communities are still an object of the ideological endeavours to make them the Ukrainians or the Carpatho - Rusyns. However, these are still the incomplete processes and the identity of the “typical” people is formed mainly by the immersion in the local relations and social organization.
